Some people put off starting a physical fitness routine or working on improving their health because they think it’s too late or they are too old. However, science shows that it is never too late to start getting fit or in better shape to reap the health and wellness benefits of physical activity.

The idea behind aerobics is that elevating our heartbeat rate and respiratory demands for a protracted period will improve heart-lung function, giving us the ability to exercise for longer periods, improving our endurance. Implied in this is that our vascular system will be kept free of atherosclerotic plaque and heart disease will be avoided. This proves not to be the case. Our ability to do sustained output for running and swimming will, however, improve. Lung efficiency – our ability to get oxygen in and CO2 out of our blood stream – greatly improves over someone of the same age who is sedentary.

Companionship in the form of a four-legged friend can be a real lifeline for people who are aging, especially when dementia is present.

Throughout history, animals’ primary function has been utilitarian. They helped plow fields or transport passengers. Today domesticated animals have a strong connection for humans.

Pets bring friendship to seniors and their family caregivers at a time when a little extra love is sorely needed.

With so many older adults affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia — 5.7 million people, in fact, according to the latest data from the Alzheimer’s Association — the numbers of family caregivers and those with dementia who could benefit from pets is growing and will continue to rise.

Family caregivers can improve not only the quality of life for their senior with dementia but also their own caregiving experience when a home becomes pet-friendly!

Summer sun is beginning the annual process of yielding to winter cold and wind.

As fast as the cold winds blow, we often find our senior’s aging skin drying out if action isn’t taken to protect it.

It isn’t just the cold outside air that can cause problems for our seniors’ skin, but the air inside their homes.

Dry, warm air affects their skin, making it drier and more fragile leading to cracking, bleeding and pain.

How can we help them deal with it?

As we age, many older adults tend to change the way they eat. This change may be intentional for many and while for others it is done unknowingly.

Many will eat less thinking their bodies don’t need as much food because they aren’t as physically active as they once were.

This way of thinking may be true for overall number of calories but not for nutritional content.

Some older adults experience more trouble with chewing and swallowing foods when they eat, taste foods differently, don’t feel like preparing meals for one, feel lonesome during meal times, fear ‘healthier’ foods are too expensive, or overly restrict what they eat because they are trying to control a chronic disease.

Getting old is a topic that many feel uncomfortable talking about, or push to the side and worry about later. While it certainly isn’t the most fun topic to talk about, it helps to do some research so you can learn how to enjoy spending all the extra time you will have whether it is by yourself, with your partner, or with your friends and family.
