Not Willing Your Way
Do you force and strive your way through everything you do? In class, do you push your body to where you think it should be, rather than where it is? While there is a place for using your practice to build empowerment and improve, there can be an overemphasis on this approach. Some students never ever try to overcome discomfort, and those individuals could benefit from not abandoning the ship (pose, meditation) at the first tingle of irritation. But many students push and force and strive their way through class, and probably through their lives as well. What would happen if you eased up a little and let go of where you think you should be, to truly be where you are?

The Pause
Stopping/non-doing/pausing is one of the main approaches to spiritual training. Just think about classical meditation instruction - sit down and don't do anything. Don't think on purpose, don't try to stop thinking, don't breathe any particular way, don't fidget. Just BE! This is beyond challenging for a world of human doers. This non-doing is active, and not the same as passive non-doing (television!).

I know, some of you are still wondering, but what do I DO? Observe, sense, feel without moving, without responding or reacting. That may feel like doing something, but it is more like resting in awareness. Start with five minutes a day. You can rest in savasana (if you won't be fighting sleep), sit on the floor or in a chair, or insert a few moments of pause wherever you can in your day. RESIST the urge to reach for your phone the next time you are bored (how can anyone ever be bored I will never understand, even the breath is fascinating!) and just stop trying to do anything at all, just be with what is. There is immense power in the pause once you can get out of your own way!

What is your relationship to and experience with pausing?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "What an absolutely beautiful studio and location . The class I took at 10:30 was awesome. One of the best I have taken in a while . It was challenging yet offered rest, I always admire a teacher that can mirror poses extremely well, and the overall vibe was incredible. Also the PLANTS. Would recommend this place to anyone." -Megan G.

Loving your perfectly imperfect body.
So many of us who practice yoga have an obsession with symmetry. Earlier in my teaching career I remember being horrified when I learned I had skipped a pose on one side, worried that students would be misaligned for the rest of the day. While I still try to create a balanced practice, I have loosened my grip on striving for bilateral symmetry. The vast majority of us will never be perfectly symmetrical, whether due to injury or strain patterns. What is important is to recognize and love your signature shape, even if it is wonky, and to work with what you've got! Your body is a map of your personal history and as such is worthy of kindness and gratitude. Yes, we work to minimize imbalances so we can feel more comfortable and competent in our bodies, but rather than rejecting parts of ourselves ("this is my bad knee"), choose to accept what is without adding negativity, and be thankful for all that you can do.
