As adults, there are three things we regularly do, which aren't particularly helpful, especially with our little language learners:
1) Asking endless questions
2) Using the phrase "Say...."
3) Using the phrase "Use your words"
We would never do this to another adult, especially one who didn't know our language. Imagine a child is visiting from another country.... they don't yet know our language. We wouldn't quiz them endlessly, we would teach them our language. We would model the way we say things, allowing them to soak up the language in it's natural context.
When we tell a child to "use their words" when they are upset or emotionally dysregulated, it's unlikely they will be able to, which often leads to increased frustration.
Consider reframing your interactions with your little language learners. Model language naturally, the way you would for your visiting friend, and leave the quizzes and tests for school.
