"After the longest night, today we sing up the dawn. There is a rejoicing that, even in the darkest time, the sun is not vanquished" - Dacha Avelin

Bright sunshine, long shadows, shades of silver and brown bark, crunchy, sparkly snow, warm tea, and crisp, cold air. We didn't rush but instead meandered through meadow and forest, playing with the balance between day and night, light and dark, growing and slowing. We explored the sights and sounds of the more-than-human world, slowing down in the winter woods to refresh, reflect, and reset. There were twelve who quietly listened and shared their hearts, including the forest who so graciously welcomed and embraced us. Feeling grateful for our Oakland County Parks, for the sunlight, for winter, and for the restorative practice of forest bathing.

When we allow ourselves time and space to slow ourselves down and really notice the nature which surrounds us, we not only emulate the child, we are the child. Our inside selves experience connection and relationship with the natural world of which we are integral. There is so much we can learn from the children in our lives, not the least of which is how to slow down and feel the connection which already exists between us and the more-than-human world.

When we immerse ourselves in nature in the present moment, we are connected through our heart sense to our child within. On forest therapy walks I guide, participants often share memories of time spent as children in nature. Many comment how they have not slowed themselves down to sense nature caref...

Shinrin-Yoku, which translates as 'forest bathing, originated in the 1980s in Japan as a way to promote the health benefits of exposure to natural environments and to increase support for conservation. Inspired by Shinrin-Yoku and practiced worldwide, Forest Therapy is a slow meditative walk in a natural setting following a standard sequence of elements and held with the assistance of a guide trained to facilitate the participant’s focused attention to their sensory experience. Science has shown that physical and mental health benefits of one guided forest therapy experience can last up to seven days.
