For those who were thrilled by the new blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick," here's a real-life Navy pilot to inspire: Lieutenant Madeline Swegle, who became the U.S. Navy's first African American female tactical jet pilot! Swegle, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate from Burke, Virginia, dreamed of becoming a pilot ever since her parents took her to see the Blue Angels as a young girl. She received her "Wings of Gold" in 2020 after she completed her final training flight in a T-45C Goshawk. While Rosemary Mariner became the first woman to fly a tactical fighter jet in 1974, women are still highly underrepresented among the pilot ranks today; as of 2018, less than 7% of all Navy pilots were female. Reflecting on this historic milestone after the ceremony, Swegle observed, "I never intended to be the first. I hope it’s encouraging to other people."
