Trying to get pregnant, losing a pregnancy, being pregnant, giving birth, postpartum. Any of these experiences alone can be anxiety provoking. The brains of birthing persons literally change during pregnancy to prepare for parenthood (Ammari, 2023). It’s no wonder we may feel more cautious and worried as we bring our babies into the world (especially if we are struggling to become pregnant and have had loss) Increased worry and nervousness is very common.

Anxiety becomes abnormal when the worry, fear, and/or scary thoughts become so significant that they get in the way of your ability to take care of things at home, work, or socially. You should be able to notice a range of other feelings and the worry should not consume your thoughts.

It can be hard to know what is “normal” and what’s not. Especially when many are told by those around them that being worried is normal. Anxiety doesn’t have to consume you. You can get help to learn how to manage your anxiety.

New moms are often told that being emotional after giving birth is "normal" and truth is... well... it's a little more than that.

80% of new moms and birthing persons experience the "Baby Blues". Baby Blues is a condition related to the extreme shift in hormones after delivery. Baby Blues is common and the good news is it resolves on its own. Baby Blues is NOT the same thing as Postpartum Depression (PPD/PMAD).

🔵 Baby Blues can start within a couple days of baby being born and resolves around two weeks postpartum. It can include crying for no reason, mood changes, restlessness, sadness, and irritability. Although you may have moments of undesirable emotions, you should also be able to experience enjoyable emotions such as happiness, joy, and content.

🔴 Postpartum Depression (PPD or PMAD) can start a little later; around 1-3 weeks postpartum. These symptoms do not resolve on their own. It can include the same symptoms of the baby blues which makes it confusing; however, there are some key factors that set it apart, such as: Overwhelming feelings of sadness or guilt, excessive fear or worry, feeling hopeless or worthless. These feelings are consistent and you may struggle to notice any desirable emotions.

It may be confusing to know the difference, but that's why there is help! Speak with your healthcare provider if you are noticing any of the symptoms associated with PPD/PMAD. If you are having any thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, go to an emergency room or dial 9-1-1 immediately.

Perinatal Depression more commonly known as Postpartum Depression ( ) can arise any time during pregnancy and up to one year postpartum. PPD is often diagnosed when symptoms are present for at least 2 weeks and if you notice it impacting home, work, school, etc.

I want to be clear that experiencing this is not “normal”. It is not the same as “baby blues”. Untreated PPD is serious and it can be treated. I want to make the clear: YOU👏🏽DO👏🏽NOT👏🏽HAVE👏🏽TO👏🏽SUFFER👏🏽THROUGH👏🏽IT.👏🏽

This is not a diagnosis. If you are struggling with any of these symptoms contact your OBGYN, midwife, Primary Care doc, or behavioral health provider. They can diagnose PPD and guide you in appropriate treatment. In Washington you can contact the Perinatal Warm Line at 1-888-404-7763 to get support and assistance getting connected to mental health support. 💚

If you are experiencing thoughts of harming yourself or your child, seek help immediately. Go to the nearest emergency room or dial 9-1-1.

Let's break the stigma around perinatal mental health.
