For New Therapists

Self doubt:

Am I good at this?
Do I know what I’m doing?
Am I actually being helpful?
Is my client enjoying this?
Palpation skills…

Throughout my schooling I have asked myself these questions, and many more like them, countless times. This type of thinking just kinda comes with the territory, so to speak; a natural part of being new to something. That’s what I tell myself anyway.

As a novice bodywork therapist it is of utmost importance to practice as much as possible, within reason, try things that make you uncomfortable, and be okay with making mistakes. The doubt may creep in, but don’t let it hold you back. You will become more skilled. Your knowledge of pain, and musculoskeletal issues will grow. Your palpation skills will be refined, and you will achieve success if you keep pushing forward. You can trust me when I say this because these are the things I have been telling myself from the beginning, and all of it has been true.

The hard part is being patient and trusting the process. Absorb what information you can, ask questions, try new things, and stay curious. Time is really what’s going to be the main factor here. It takes time to build up enough hours of experience to evolve and become a next level therapist.

Trust the process.
