Developing a Clinical Framework for Technology in Dementia Care 🧠🤖

As digital tools for dementia care proliferate, the challenge for clinicians and caregivers is no longer access, but selection. IPA leader Dr. Ipsit Vahia, Chair of our Mentorship and AI Task Forces, recently addressed this critical issue by sharing a newly published framework for navigating the tech spectrum.

The core finding? Technology is not a "one-size-fits-all" solution. Effective implementation must be tailored to the patient’s clinical status, living environment, and specific economic circumstances.

Key takeaways from the framework:
🔸 Practicality over Sophistication: High-tech or expensive tools are not inherently superior to simpler interventions.
🔸 Targeted Support: Focus on four critical needs: medication management, wandering prevention, fall prevention, and home safety.
🔸 The Human Element: Clinical communication remains the cornerstone of successfully integrating technology into care plans.

At IPA, we advocate for the evidence-based use of innovation to improve the quality of life for older adults. We invite our members to review this framework to better support caregivers in their technology decisions.

As the global population of older adults continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, nations are accelerating their efforts to combat the rising tide of dementia. A recent report in Nature highlights China's intensified "war" on Alzheimer’s—a comprehensive strategy that serves as a critical reference for the international scientific community.

Faced with a significant demographic shift, China is investing heavily in a multi-pronged approach that includes:
🔸 Advanced pharmacological research and drug development.
🔸 Precision diagnostics for earlier intervention.
🔸 Innovative surgical procedures and neuromodulation.

At the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA), we recognize that our mission is truly global. Observing these large-scale strategies in different regions is essential for fostering the international collaboration needed to improve mental health and care for older people everywhere.

In observance of World Sleep Day, the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) reaffirms its commitment to educating the global community on the vital link between sleep health and brain longevity.Earlier this year, we explored this critical connection in our webinar, "The Power of Sleep to Protect Body and Mind," featuring Dr. Jurgen Claassen. His research dives deep into the complex relationship between poor sleep and dementia: is it a cause, a consequence, or both?

🔵Evidence-Based Insights:
Current research suggests that sleep loss—often defined as less than 6 hours per night—can carry a significant relative risk of developing dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies.🎥 Revisit the Knowledge: Members can access the full webinar in our digital library to learn more about the potential mechanisms that protect the aging brain.Let’s prioritize rest to ensure a healthier future for all.

Editor-in-Chief Dr. Dilip Jeste from International Psychogeriatrics recently shared great news about the continued growth of the flagship journal of our association.

As of the end of February 2026, the journal’s CiteScore Tracker has reached 10.0, an increase from 8.8 last year, reflecting the growing impact and visibility of research published in the journal. The CiteScore metric, based on the Scopus citation database, provides a transparent measure of a journal’s average citations per document over a four-year period. Currently, more than 26,000 journals and serial titles are
included in this widely used metric.

This milestone reflects the outstanding contributions of authors, reviewers, editorial board members, and readers worldwide, who continue to advance scholarship on mental health and aging. More importantly, the Journal appreciates the submission from our IPA members.

The IPA joins WHO Regional Office for Europe in raising awareness about a critical health fact: Alcohol consumption is linked to at least seven types of cancer, including breast and colon cancer.

As we age, the physiological impact of substance use becomes increasingly complex. Substance abuse in older adults is a growing but often "hidden" clinical challenge. At the IPA, we emphasize that:

⚠️ Increased Vulnerability: Older adults metabolize alcohol differently, leading to higher risks of toxicity and harmful interactions with medications.
⚠️ The Cancer Link: The risk increases with consumption, and for the aging population, this can exacerbate existing comorbidities.
⚠️ Clinical Vigilance: Detection and assessment are vital. It is essential for healthcare providers to integrate substance use screenings into routine geriatric mental health evaluations.

The Privilege of Prevention: By addressing substance abuse today, we improve the quality of life and long-term health outcomes for older adults tomorrow.

We are proud to highlight the impactful work of Dr. Terence Chong, IPA Board Director, and his contributions to enhancing mental health support within residential aged care settings.

Bridging the gap between research and clinical practice is fundamental to the IPA mission. Dr. Chong recently shared three new, specialized Help Sheets designed to support residents in aged care facilities. These resources focus on:

🔹 Supporting Mental Health: Practical strategies for emotional well-being.
🔹 Adjustment to Care: Navigating the transition into residential settings.
🔹 Accessing Support: Ensuring residents know how and where to find mental health services.

This initiative, developed by the Healthy Ageing Service at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne with support from Eastern Melbourne PHN, reflects the interdisciplinary collaboration we champion at the IPA.

We congratulate Dr. Chong and his colleagues at The University of Melbourne and RANZCP for their commitment to improving the lives of older adults.
