In honor of National Cancer Prevention Month, Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories would like to highlight our special partnership with the Clinical Cancer Center at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Main Campus! To support the immediate needs of our cancer patients, we have a dedicated cancer center laboratory that aids providers with the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of cancer. Our Cobas Pro is the latest available generation of Roche’s chemistry analyzers that we've set up for specialized testing. It analyzes biomarkers and other indicators that show how well a patient is responding to treatment, such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy. Our Cancer Center laboratory is integral to comprehensive cancer care, enabling quality care that improves patient outcomes and advanced cancer treatment.

This past week, Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories had the pleasure of hosting students from the Native Nations Nursing, Helpers, and Healers Summit as part of the Ignite program, in collaboration with Froedtert Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin! 🏥🔬 These future leaders had the opportunity to visit various departments within our lab, while participating in simulated, interactive lab exercises as they learned about potential careers in pathology, medical technology, laboratory science and more.

It's important for us to show the next generation of healthcare leaders how essential our team's support is for patient care, and we hope we’ve inspired them!

As Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories continues to prioritize top tier patient care and expand its footprint of outreach within the community, we are proud to announce that our newest client is Milwaukee Health Services, Inc. Milwaukee Health Services (MHSI) was founded in 1989 as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with two locations located on Milwaukee’s North side. Serving 20,000 patients annually, MHSI employs specialists in family medicine, pediatrics, podiatry, dental, and OBGYN. In addition, they provide dental, pharmacy, social work and behavioral health services to their patients.

MHSI is led by Dr. Tito Izard, MD (President/CEO), who also sits on the Froedtert Health Hospital Board of Directors. WDL will provide full-time phlebotomists to MHSI between both of their locations, and phlebotomy services will be exclusively dedicated to MHSI patients. Welcome to the team!

It is with great sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Erica Carpenter, Blood Bank Manager for Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories. Erica's tenure at WDL spans over the course of 20 years, beginning with her clinical rotations as an MLS student in all departments of the lab; but she had a passion for Blood Bank from the start and listed that as her first choice when being interviewed as a student. Throughout her career at WDL, Erica worked in several capacities within the Blood Bank until she assumed the role of Blood Bank Manager in 2021.

Erica's vibrant spirit was reflected through her commitment to service and the well-being of patients and team members. Erica's philanthropic persona permeated through the work she did with both the Blood Bank and the Employee Appreciation Committee (EAC), where she implemented fun and interactive activities for members of the lab throughout the year. She was a powerful force in her department and the impact of her investment in WDL will continue to be felt for years to come. She advanced the excellence of the Blood Bank and employee wellness, and we are truly indebted to her for allowing WDL to be the space where she cultivated her professional growth in clinical laboratory science, leadership, and engagement.

Erica was one of our beloved members of our WDL family, and she will be deeply missed. We are eternally grateful for her impact on our organization and the lives she touched throughout her career and lifetime. Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, children, and the rest of her loved ones.

As we conclude this year's Hispanic Heritage Month, we are honored to recognize and uplift the Hispanic and Latinx communities that make Milwaukee so vibrant. We'd like to give a special shout-out to one of our community partners, Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers for their unwavering commitment to the health and wellness of Milwaukee’s community, especially Latinx families. WDL is grateful that our partnership exemplifies their mission to "improve the health and well-being of Milwaukee and surrounding communities by providing quality patient-centered family-based health care, health education, and social services that’s free from linguistic, cultural, and economic barriers." Their dedication truly makes a difference and advances our commitment to quality patient care!

Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories is proud to hire bilingual phlebotomists who do exemplary work and bring a personal touch to the communities they serve. By bridging language and cultural understanding, we aim to ensure every patient feels seen, heard, and cared for; while also elevating the cultural diversity of individuals within our organization. Together, we’re building a healthier community.

This week’s Hispanic Heritage Month highlight is Dr. César Milstein. Born in Argentina in 1927, Milstein's parents encouraged him and his brothers to make education a priority. After graduating from the University of Buenos Aires with a Ph. D., Milstein began working with the National Institute of Microbiology in Buenos Aires in 1957. Afterward, he earned another Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1960 and became a member of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England.

Milstein's primary area of study was with antibodies, and in 1984, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for helping to develop monoclonal antibodies. Milstein’s research and studies are especially important to laboratory diagnostics, as monoclonal antibodies can help clone and produce an almost unlimited amount of desired antibodies; which are often used in pregnancy tests, blood cell typing and detecting viruses and bacterial diseases.

As the leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals, sepsis continues to position itself as a medical emergency that needs a critical attention. In our ongoing efforts to improve the detection and prompt management of sepsis in patients in the emergency department, Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories is proud to be implementing IntelliSep sepsis testing in the Froedtert Health Hospital Emergency Departments. The IntelliSep test will be incorporated into initial triage screening of patients presenting to the emergency department with concern for sepsis and our department guideline on sepsis treatment/management.

The FDA-cleared IntelliSep test is a diagnostic tool that categorizes patients into three bands according to their probability of sepsis based on a standard blood draw (1-lowest probability, 2-intermediate probability, and 3-highest probability); the test takes around 8 minutes to result once on the instrument. The test assesses the cellular host response via deformability cytometry of leukocytes to aid in the early detection of sepsis. Band results will serve as an additional data point for the ED clinical team to aid in the diagnosis of sepsis.

During this Sepsis Awareness Month, we are reminded of our commitment to innovation in science and unyielding dedication to utilizing essential diagnostics and technology when it comes to managing our patient care acumen. Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories has the depth, resources and experience to provide the right test. At the right time. Every time.
