This week’s Torah Portion, Emor (Leviticus 21:1-24:23), describes the wide range of festivals in the Jewish year. The mix of serious and joyous festivals parallels the Yamim we recently observed. On Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Commemoration Day) and Yom HaZikaron (Israel Memorial Day) we experience profound sadness and a sense of loss. Then on Yom HaAtzmaut (Israel Independence Day), we celebrate achievements and hope in a joyous manner.

Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3, reminds us that this is the reality of life. “For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under the heavens.”

May we help each other face our many emotions healthily and happily. May we be able to feel each other’s pain as well as share our rejoicing, and may we find the strength to face all these times with the knowledge that we are never alone, but rather part of a supportive, loving community.

Earlier this month, residents celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut with an immersive Passport to Israel experience—exploring the sights, sounds, and flavors of Israel without leaving home. From placing personal prayers at a mock Western Wall to “visiting” Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and a Kibbutz, it was a meaningful journey filled with connection, culture, and joy.

This week is a double portion, called Achare Mot – Kedoshim. The first portion relates events after the death of Aaron’s two sons – Nadav and Avihu, while the second portion deals with holiness, including the phrase “you shall be holy for I, the Eternal G-d am holy. But I want to focus on another verse in the second portion – Kedoshim.

The following words are found in Leviticus 19:32, where we read,” You shall rise before the aged and show deference to the old.” While we live in a culture that is often focused on youth, our tradition reminds us to respect the wisdom and experience of the elderly. A Jewish proverb states that, “for the ignorant, old age is winter; but for the learned, old age is the harvest.”

All elderly are learned in the ways of the world, life, and relationships, and we can all celebrate the harvest of their wisdom. May we always be respectful of all members of our community, be they young, old, or in between. All have something of value to offer us.

Sophie spent the afternoon spreading smiles, brightening the day for residents and staff alike (and soaking up plenty of belly rubs!). This is a sweet reminder of how pet visits can lift spirits, ease stress, and create joyous moments throughout our community. 🐾 ‎

Today, we honor the memory of Israel’s fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism. This solemn day reminds us of the profound sacrifices made in the pursuit of peace and security, and we pause in reflection and remembrance. May their courage and dedication never be forgotten.

This week’s Torah Portion – Tazria-Metzora (Leviticus 12:1-15:33) addresses the unpleasantness of a skin ailment (often mistranslated as leprosy) that affects an individual, their clothes, and even their home. In this portion, we learn about a communicable disease, how to cure it, and ways to stop it from spreading.

While few people like talking about this, sometimes we need to address issues we would rather avoid. And even something like this can have lessons for us. The rabbis note that these are not only physical ailments, but they are also illnesses of behavior. Gossip, slander, and other negative behaviors are like diseases that can spread like germs and infect homes and communities. We need to learn how to cure ourselves of such actions and how to stop them from spreading, which is harder in the age of social media.

Only by addressing things we don’t want to talk about can we find a way to cure ourselves and make our communities healthier.
