The end of this week’s Torah portion (Ki Teitzei – Deut. 21:10-25:19) includes what seems to be a contradiction. We are told to “remember what Amalek did to you on the…way out of Egypt.” Furthermore, we are told to “blot out the memory of Amalek,” but “do not forget.”
One explanation is that history, both the good and the bad, needs to be remembered. Only by doing so can we avoid a repeat of the worst. What we are to blot out are those forces that caused the bad, whether they are of our own doing or caused by external entities.
May we never forget the need to remember and learn from the past so that we can blot out the forces of evil that rear their heads in each and every generation.
