A brief overview of what is ‘normal’ range of motion in the hips!
Is your Hip ROM considered 'normal’? 🤔
When we think of the hips in relation to yoga practice, “hip openers” are often what comes to mind. We associate yoga poses with more mobile hips, and while that can be true, it’s far from being the whole story...
The "normal" range of motion we need in the hip joint to carry out our daily function is actually far less than most of us would think...
🤯 “It blew my mind looking at the ROM tables and thinking wow, this is so low compared to what I was expecting 'normal' to be" - Rachel Land, Yoga Medicine® Therapeutic Specialist, E-RYT500, YACEP
Curious about how your hips stack up to 'normal range'? Check out the chart and test your own mobility, in both prone and supine positions as needed.
How'd you do?

If your range of motion far surpasses that of normal, that's okay. But remember that more isn't always better. Gaining neurologic control of your mobility, and perhaps even losing some of your end range, could help you feel better in your body, and the value of viewing hip mobility not as an end goal, but through the context of how you would like your hips to function in a yoga context and beyond.
Studying the anatomy, evaluation, function and dysfunction of the hips is crucial for any movement professional, yoga teachers included.
Whether we work with groups or one-on-one, whether our students experience hip injuries or simply want to set themselves up for long-term health, that knowledge empowers us to move beyond familiar cues and ideals of alignment, to not only support our students during practice but to better equip them for life outside it.
⭐ That's why we transformed one of our most popular in-person orthopedic Yoga Teacher Trainings into a self-paced online program you can complete from the comforts of home: The 2022 Hip Training! ⭐
At the end of this training, you will have the knowledge and experience you need to safely evaluate, program and empower your students to work towards healthier hips.
We start February 1st! Are you joining us? https://yogamedicine.com/event/hip-intensive-yoga-teacher-training/
