I know that sounds backwards if you’ve been told to cut carbs to improve fertility.
Here’s the context. My client did exactly what her OB and bootcamp trainer told her to do: lose weight so she could get pregnant. That meant 1400 calories, low carb, high protein, and cutting out all carbs and sugar (plus all her favorite foods).
Yes, she lost 50 pounds.
But that eating pattern wasn’t fueling her fertility and it definitely didn’t bring her joy.
With intense bootcamp-style workouts, the deficit was too aggressive, and there was no focus on the foods and nutrients that support reproductive health. The guidance was basically: “lose weight, cut sugar, take any prenatal with folic acid.”
She was understandably skeptical that a balanced, personalized approach (without cutting out carbs and sugar completely or banning her favorite foods) could impact fertility more than the restrictive, non-targeted approach that produced dramatic weight loss.
