Doug likes mints.
Doug is also a Scottish mediator. And when he pops one from his little Smints dispenser, he offers one to everyone else in the room.
That’s it. That’s the whole move.
No icebreaker exercise. No forced introductions.
Just — want one?
People take the mint. They’re chewing.
They’re calm. Nobody’s talking for a second.
And somehow, that second is exactly what the room needed.
We talked about this on Episode 2 of Untying the Knot with
What do you do to get real in the room? 👇

Who’s talking about divorce as a religious/spiritual moment?
I asked as someone who really doesn’t identify as either.
But, it seems without the sort of existential reckoning…the work and process feels a bit flat, or bankrupt.
Yes, Divorce is transactional.
Yes, Divorce is logistical.
Yes, Divorce is emotional.
Yes, Divorce is psychological.
Yes, Divorce is neuroscience.
Yes, Divorce is physiological.
But, what about spiritual or religious?
And I mean this in a secular sense.
I mean this in our rights and rituals kind of way.
For example, how do we grieve the end of a relationship?
Is there a day of the dead for the relationship?
Is there a cemetery for the relationship?
Is there an altar?
All really interesting questions I want to address more and more in my work.

I use psychedelics in every mediation—just not the ones you think.

Most people come to mediation to be right.
That’s okay.
The wanting to be understood is exactly what makes it work.
You don’t have to come in ready to compromise. Just ready to talk.
The rest tends to take care of itself.

#1 mistake in mediation is often waiting to long. Folks are relieved and surprised after the process and often remark that they only wish they came sooner.

Everyone asks me this.
And honestly? It’s the wrong question.
“Can mediation work with a narcissist?” assumes you’ve already diagnosed your ex — and that the label tells you what to do next.
Here’s what actually matters: the behavior in the room.
In this video I break down what specific dynamics make mediation harder, what makes it still possible, and the one thing that changes everything.
If you’ve been told mediation won’t work for your situation — watch this before you decide.

There’s a reason I wear flannel to every mediation. And no, it’s not because I lost my suit. 👔➡️🪵
The research on warmth vs. competence says what you wear changes whether people trust you enough to be honest. In divorce mediation, that’s everything.

Recently, Kare 11’s ten-o’clock news ran a feature story on “Beer & Bequest,” our will-writing workshop at Tin Whiskers, a local St. Paul brewery. The firm has been co-hosting this event with Tin Whiskers for the last year or so, aiming to bringing the practice of law into comfortable spaces. Specifically, “Beer & Bequest” brings wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directive into a casual atmosphere and conversational space. No stuffy office or or intimidating courtroom. Instead, we talk shop while enjoying Black Sheep pizza and Tin Whiskers brews. What could be better?
“Beer & Bequest” reflects McLaughlin Law’s down-to-earth approach to the legal practice generally. Our mission is to get honest, effective, and affordable legal counsel into community. Period.
As a general practice, McLaughlin Law is a specialist in everything. This model is a rarity. It’s so rare it’s almost unheardof. Here’s our rationale: experience has shown that more often than not, legal problems are incredibly inter-connected, entangled, and don’t follow neat divisions. For example, a “simple” divorce will often spur a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which in turn raises question about real estate law—from foreclosure to mortgage refi, to quit claim deeds. In short, the more we know, the more we can help our clients. As a result, McLaughlin Law assists clients with legal issues across the board—from business to immigration, and adoption to probate.
If you—or your neighbor, coworker, family member, or friend—has a legal issue, give us a call (or text or Facebook message). We offer free consultations and would love to connect!
