The past month in Minnesota has been especially heavy on our communities. There has been so much fear, anxiety, and grief. Even as a mental health therapist, I’ve found it hard to know what to say or do to show up for my community.

What feels most true and accessible to me right now is presence and creative expression.

I’m hosting a virtual gathering that uses intuitive art practice as a way to reconnect with ourselves and allow our bodies and minds to process, move through, and release what we’ve been carrying. You’re invited to bring whatever is present for you, to meet it with curiosity, to feel through it, and to be witnessed in community.

No art experience or special materials are needed. Any pen or pencil and paper you already have will be more than enough.

It's been difficult to process what has been happening here in the Cities and across our MN BIPOC communities. As a mental health therapist, I have watched my clients sit in helplessness, confusion, anger and fear. I see their pain, but am too at a loss for words to describe what we're all going through. I sit with them and hope that my presence will feel enough for a moment.

I have felt every emotion across the spectrum, but mostly anger. I am angry at the people, systems, apathy, and complicity that has allowed us to be here. My work focuses on restoring dignity, restoring what has been stripped from us...healing from the systems that have perpetrated harm, traumatization and re-traumatization. We are seeing those systems at play right in front of us. What's happened here in MN is a loss of human decency and dignity.

They want to keep us traumatized and in fear. I urge you all to rest when you need to and take care of yourselves to continue the work and to be able to act when we need to. I am opening up some free therapy sessions for anyone in MN impacted by ICE. Please watch out for virtual gatherings for those that want to process or just be in community during this time.

The first time I met Ka Zoua was at a mental health conference. I attended her breathwork workshop and introduced myself afterward. It was a time I was craving community and connection. She gave me the fullest hug I had felt in a long time. That's Ka Zoua. Her generous spirit is a gift to all of us who have had the privilege of being in her space. I am grateful our paths crossed.

As a mental health therapist, I know how important it is to have my own practice. My work with her has helped me release things in my body I didn't know I was still holding. Slowly, I discovered my body softening, a sign of safety in the body. We spend so much time thinking through things and not enough feeling through. We have to address the body first. We have to feel safe enough in our body to rest, to build resilience, to pause, to breathe, to reflect and to take care of the other stuff. When the body feels safe, the mind opens.

On the coldest day, my favorite people still came to yoga. We moved through the heaviness of the week with long, slow holds, giving space to the emotions that surfaced, breathing through them, and letting the body soften where it needed to.

A reminder that even on the coldest days, warmth and hope are created from within. ✨

Dear Hmong Daughter-In-Law,

I have not forgotten you. If you're feeling disheartened, it is a message to let you know that something needs attention. Disheartenment can come from exhaustion and depletion. It is a message to you to pause, take a deep belly breath, create, express, cry, scream, move, or rest, whatever feels right for you in this moment. Or maybe it calls for you to simply be present with it. No need to fix it, understand it, or manage it. Your presence with it is acknowledgement. Naming it is acknowledgement.....and in doing so, you honor yourself. Keep going. You are on your way.

I'm here with you always,
A fellow Hmong Daughter-In-Law

The new revolution is healing. It's time we healed from the systems we have lived in and been conditioned by; white supremacy, racism, institutionalized religion, patriarchy, ableism, elitism, classism, and the list goes on. They benefit no one and are harmful to EVERYONE. They have benefitted from us being in survival mode, fear, and traumatized. They work very hard to maintain that fear and traumatization. They want to keep us small and hidden. That's because healed people know their worth and healed people heal people. They will speak up, stand up for themselves, demand respect and dignity, think critically, and engage in the world more fully. As a client of mine put it, "Healing is punk rock".

I had the pleasure of spending the morning with Samantha Lee Fitness. We had a great conversation about the mind-body connection. This is an important aspect of the work I do with my clients. You can't talk about the mind without talking about the body and vice versa.

Check out Sam and the incredible work she's doing!

Dear Hmong Daughter-In-Law,

I see your bright smile and hear your laughter. I see your willingness to take it all on without complaint. I see your heart in the things you do for others. I also see your exhaustion and the absence of joy in your eyes. I see the quiet weight you carry, expectations, unspoken roles, and balancing between tradition, family, and self. But healing doesn't have to happen in silence or solitude. You have a community.

Now is your time to rest and come back to yourself. You already have everything you need. You are enough. You are loved. You are resilient. You are connected. In community, healing comes through weaving together stories, strength, hope, and joy. It is here in connection that we can rediscover who we are, reclaim parts of ourselves we thought were lost, rebuild trust, and remind us that we belong.

I am here with you,
A fellow Hmong Daughter-In-Law

Healing is not a linear process and it doesn't happen all at once. Healing takes time. It's full of celebrations and wins, but also ups and downs, setbacks and pauses. It is in these moments that we discover the depths of who we are and dream of possibilities. Wherever you are in your healing journey, you are on track. Keep going.

I'd been having conversations in my small circles about intergenerational trauma for over 20 years, long before I became a therapist. Back then, I didn't have the term "intergenerational trauma". I used the language I had and spoke about it as "inherited dysfunction". Trauma and mental health were not conversations most people wanted to have. I often felt alone. Discovering the language to describe my experience helped me feel seen. It was and is a vital part of my healing journey.

Art had always been most accessible to me when I didn't have the words. I created this illustration to show how intergenerational trauma can be passed down. This information is based on my history, experience and knowledge as a healing person, artist and therapist. This is for educational purposes only. This may not represent or reflect all experiences. We each have our own stories. What is yours?
