Student Relations Hosts Pre-PA Coffee Hours.

The MAPA Student Relations Committee is on a mission to break down barriers for prospective, first-generation PA students, one cup of coffee at a time.

On April 10, the Student Relations Committee hosted its first Pre-PA Coffee Hour at Dovetail Cafe in Duluth.

Undergraduate students from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the College of St. Scholastica discussed PA School applications and talked strategy for the Centralized Application Services for Physician Assistants, also known as CASPA.

Celebrating 50 Years of MAPA History

In 1990, MAPA set its sights on a big goal: establishing a Physician Assistant program in the state. With a $2,000 investment to get things started, Mark Zellmer led the charge, beginning conversations with the University of Minnesota–Duluth and soon after with Augsburg College in Minneapolis.

Lisa Howe served as Augsburg’s interim Program Director for several years as discussions and negotiations progressed. By 1994, Augsburg officially committed to launching the program.

At the same time, other institutions were exploring similar ideas. Minnesota State University in Mankato developed a proposal, and the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse partnered with Gundersen Medical Foundation and Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences to create another program.

The momentum paid off in 1995: Augsburg welcomed its first PA class in May. The Mayo–Gundersen–University of Wisconsin–La Crosse program admitted its first class that September. Although the Mankato proposal ultimately did not move forward, these early efforts helped lay the foundation for PA education in the region.
