The end of the school year comes with many complex feelings.

It is best to not assume you know how someone is feeling, for example saying, “Aren’t you so excited that school is over?!”

Instead ask open-ended questions such as, “how do you feel about the ending of the school year?” This will give the student an opportunity to share an honest answer.

Good luck to all the caregivers and staff in the schools during this time of big transitions! We are here to help if you are needing any support.

We love rainbow 🌈 colors, especially paired with a book tackling big feelings. Many sessions with our youngest clients start with the basics; understanding feelings and finding safe ways to express them. How is your color monster feeling today?

March is Child Life Month! Child life is recognized as essential by the American Academy of Pediatrics in meeting the healthcare needs of children and families.

Read below to learn more about what the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) says about the child life profession:

"Child life intervention minimizes both the immediate and potential long-term effects of stress, anxiety and psychosocial trauma, ultimately empowering children, families and their support systems to reach their full potential. Child life professionals are uniquely educated and trained to provide children, families and their support systems opportunities to cope, gain a sense of mastery, engage in self-expression and promote resiliency."

As child life specialists, we use a lot of books to guide children through different life experiences. Therefore, you know we get excited about new publications, especially when it tackles a topic like grief, emotions, and feelings because oof some days there are A LOT of big feelings.
Real parent talk – when this book arrived, I was eager to show the kids. They, however, had different ideas, and were bouncing off the walls and initially were not super excited about the idea of reading this book together as a group. Very quickly though they started noticing details, they started to identify with feelings and absorbing the concept that grief isn’t always death, but life changes big or little. Disappointment about not winning, heartache about moving away from friends or jealousy of not being invited. We all grieve differently and about different things. Not only is this book inclusive (representation matters!), but this book normalizes these experiences, because even as adults emotions and feelings can be so hard to understand!

Talking to kids about a topic like cancer can feel overwhelming.

Breaking down the topic into smaller pieces can help you feel more prepared for a complex conversation. Start with the basics. By talking about what cancer is and how it works, you have laid the foundation for more conversations with your children in the future.

Whether it is cancer, death, or another topic that feels tricky, we are here to help you find the words to have these important conversations with your children. Let’s work on this together!

As a female owned small business we are invested in our community, working hard to offer equitable care and affordable services. With your assistance in purchasing items off of our wish list, we can do this more often, and offer a greater range of complimentary services to families.

We encourage purchasing items from other small businesses in the community, but we also understand that to stretch a dollar we rely on big box stores.

Whichever you choose, we appreciate you thinking of us and the families we care for!

During this season of gratitude and reflecting upon the year, we wanted to express our appreciation and say thank you to everyone who has supported Empowered Kids while we built our business.

Thank you to our online community for engaging with us (and our posts!).

Thank you to the child life specialists in private practice who have led the way and who are welcoming and generous in sharing knowledge.

Thank you to everyone who has shared info about our business, handed out flyers and sent referrals.

Thank you to our families and friends for believing in and encouraging us.

Finally, thank you to the families who allow us into their lives and to be part of their story. What a privilege and honor it is to do this work.

Pill swallowing is a life skill, and like most skills, requires some practice. It is ideal to learn pill swallowing before a medication needs to be started, so begin practicing now when the pressure is low and the candy is already in the house.

Starting with small candies like Nerds builds confidence as it often leads to immediate success. Gradually increase the size of the candy when your child feels successful.

Similarly to other skills, it may be frustrating when it does not come easily, and for some there are big emotions associated with it.

If you or your child (no matter how old they are!) struggle with pill swallowing, reach out to us—we are here to help!
