For many, this season holds a lot of mixed emotions and feelings.

While in a session this week a young client shared he wanted to keep doing creative projects. When asked what he likes about them, he stated “because we can talk about my dad“.

It was a good reminder that no matter how young or old someone is, they will likely always want to talk about their deceased loved one and are always thinking about them…you won’t upset them. So say their name, share a memory, acknowledge their existence.

Pill swallowing is a life skill, and like most skills requires some practice. It is ideal to not learn pill swallowing when a medication is being started, so begin now (!) when the pressure is low, and the candy is already in the house. Starting with a small candies like Nerds builds confidence as it often leads to immediate success. Gradually increase the size when the child feels successful. Similarly to other skills, it may feel frustrating when it does not come easily, and for some there are big emotions associated with it. If you or your child (no matter how old they are!) struggle with pill swallowing, reach out to us; will have you feeling successful in no time! 🎉

Most would look at this picture and think this session involves making shapes with Play-Doh. But in reality what you see here is an x-ray machine and three levels of powerful medicine all hoping to get rid of a terrible illness. Each week for many months we have played the same scenario because play is how children process challenging life events. They may not have the words to explain what they’re thinking, but through play they make it very clear. If you and your family are experiencing a challenging life event always make room for play. ❤️💚💙

The vicious actions that took place at Annunciation Catholic School are unfortunately becoming all too common in our society. While the rest of the country moves on, those of us who live blocks from the school will never forget. These are our friends, neighbors and their precious children. Many others have had the emotional bandwidth to create wonderful posts outlining strong resources. We encourage you to review them and reach out to us if needed. We are here to support you now and years into the future. This event has lifelong impact on all of us. For many families, the transition back to school can come with a lot of emotions. It might feel like the experience of riding a roller coaster—
🩵You might be excited and nervous leading up to the start
💜You don’t know what to expect and there might be the building of anticipation
💚The ride itself could be fun or it could be upsetting
💙After it’s done there may be a sense of relief, and possibly the statement of “it wasn’t as scary as expected!”

💛Or, this might be a situation that continues to be a challenge. Like riding a roller coaster, each individual has their own unique experience.

Once the school schedule becomes routine, things typically even out. BUT, if your child needs a little extra help with their transition, please reach out to us. You are not alone in your experience, and we are here to support your family! 💕

How often do you think about a specific feeling, the color you associate with that feeling, and how closely some of these colors/feelings sit next to each other?

Some people use the color red ❤️ to represent anger and blue 💙 to represent sadness. But sometimes the blue and red blend together to make purple 💜and that’s the feeling of disappointment.

There are MANY feelings (and words to describe feelings), just like there are MANY shades of colors.

It’s helpful for kids (and grownups!) to remember:
💛 It is normal to feel more than one feeling at a time
💛 Some people’s feelings are bolder than others

As adults, let’s help kids learn about and embrace the many colorful feelings they have all blending together within themselves!

Hey members!

Join us on Thursday, July 10th at 5:30 PM.

Legacy is often thought of as the impact a person leaves after they have died, but what does “legacy” really look like? Legacy is built over time through everyday interactions leading to lasting memories.

Empowered Kids will facilitate a legacy building group art activity where each family will create a custom Celebration Plate to be used for those special moments now and in the future.

Be sure to register for this FREE event through Gilda’s Club Minnesota soon, as space is limited.

As applicants of the Coming Up Rosies grant, we were gifted a bundle of Smile Kits! Each kit comes with the book “My Hair Went on Vacation”, a colorful Rosie head scarf and creative materials to make either a bandanna, head or neck scarf or superhero cape for someone who needs a boost in confidence while experiencing hair loss.
For child life specialists and especially for those of us working in the community setting, this grant and partnering with incredible organizations such as Coming Up Rosies provides vital resources and has a huge impact on children and their families! 🎨🖍️💕

The end of the school year comes with many complex feelings.

It is best to not assume you know how someone is feeling, for example saying, “Aren’t you so excited that school is over?!”

Instead ask open-ended questions such as, “how do you feel about the ending of the school year?” This will give the student an opportunity to share an honest answer.

Good luck to all the caregivers and staff in the schools during this time of big transitions! We are here to help if you are needing any support.
