AURORA UPGRADE: We now have a G4 (Severe) Watch in place for both Sunday, June 1 & Monday, June 2. Mechanically, this doesn't do anything more than cement the idea that Sunday night will likely be the prime time for viewing.
It is always important to note, these forecasts are seldom perfect. Deviations in time, intensity (and still unknown magnetic structure of the energy) will ultimately dictate how this plays out. The map below is a rough assumption of what G4 can bring in terms of who might be able to see the aurora with the naked eye & those that will need help in the form of a camera.
NOAA has highlighted at least some chance this could escalate to G5 status, the highest level we have. At G5, most all of the United States would theoretically be fair game for a show. These are quite rare (think back to the "big one" last year). Conversely, a weaker impact would drive the view line much farther north. Many unknowns remain but there is the potential for a high ceiling if all the ingredients play out properly. As a result, those with interest in seeing the northern lights should continue to monitor for fresh updates.
