This morning, Diane Tran, Fairview’s executive director of community health equity and engagement, shared the message "who you are is how you lead" at the 3M Open Women’s Leadership Summit.

During the panel discussion, Tran shared how Fairview’s commitment to health equity is deeply-rooted in our community partnerships. This mission is what lead us to create the M Health Fairview Center for Community Health Equity where we continue to address barriers to healthcare while co-creating solutions alongside those who are most affected.

This work recently earned Fairview Health Services the Foster G. McGaw Prize from the American Hospital Association for excellence in improving community health and wellness.

Thank you to the 3M Open for the opportunity to spotlight Tran’s leadership and the work our teams are doing across Fairview to make healthcare more accessible for all.

Last night, eight Fairview employees and their families got to play against professional golfer Mason Andersen during the 3M Open's "Beat the Pro" event. Each took their best aim at the 18th hole, and even if they didn’t get that hole in one, it certainly made for a memorable experience.

For years, the 3M Open has supported our health system through generous donations that support the lifechanging care we provide patients and families – and by providing unforgettable opportunities like this for our teams!

This year, we are back bringing wellness to the 3M Open. Our Sun Safety Stations are stocked with sunscreen so golf fans can lather up and protect their skin while enjoying the tournament. Families can find some much-needed respite in our Family Care Center located in the Fan Village where we will have snacks, activities for the kids, breastfeeding spaces and changing rooms.

We are beyond grateful to be the recipient of 2025 Foster G. McGaw Prize.

Last week, we gathered alongside our community partners to celebrate this honor and the shared vision behind it: improving community health and advancing health equity across Minnesota.

Every year, the American Hospital Association gives this award to a health system who has consistently demonstrated their commitment to creating healthier, more resilient communities. For us, this award reflects the decades of trust, deep-rooted collaboration, and unified goal of improving the health and wellbeing of the people we serve.

None of it would be possible without our community partners. Their expertise has guided, shaped, and brought this work to life. We are proud to stand beside them as we celebrate this award.

Celebrating 100 years of care at M Health Fairview Clinic - Rice Street means honoring the legacy of community-focused, partner-driven care that has been the cornerstone of our St. Paul clinic. Which is exactly what we did during today's health fair celebration and ceremony.

Highlights included:
🧑‍🌾 Groundbreaking of our new community garden with Urban Roots
🥕 Fresh produce from Fair Table, our Food is Medicine program
🍴 Free food from Nanny's Kitchen
🗣 Speakers including Mayor Melvin Carter, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Fairview team members all spoke about the deep roots of care and connection at Rice Street.

"This milestone is a testament to our place in this community and taking care of its people. It is a testament to the care we provide. It’s not enough what we do in our hospitals and clinics,” said James Hereford, president and CEO of Fairview Health Services. “Our mission has mandated us to be involved in our community and we take that mission very seriously.”

This mission is one of the reasons Fairview has received the 2025 Foster G. McGaw Award from the American Hospital Association – a national honor recognizing our sustained commitment to improving community health by breaking down barriers to care.

At Fairview, we know what’s possible when we deliver healthcare that puts our communities first. For years, we have:

👩‍⚕️provided people thousands of free vaccines
🍎made fresh, healthy food more accessible
🏥offered free health and wellness services at our Health Commons
👥built bridges between our cultural communities and institutions
-- and more all working alongside trusted community partners.

This work is what drives us. And now, it’s being nationally recognized. We are proud to receive the 2025 Foster G. McGaw Award from the American Hospital Association. The annual prize honors one health system for its community impact – and we are the first Minnesota health system in nearly 30 years to earn this award.

James Smith, MD, a sports medicine physician, has one goal: help people heal from their injuries and get back to doing what they love. “I want people to be active. And I want their activities to be done safely.”

For Smith, patient care is all about partnership. “I hope to support patients by empowering them with information about their condition and treatment options,” he says. “My goal is to partner with them to help accomplish their health goals.”

This year, he’s bringing that same spirit to the field as a medical director for the USA Cup Soocer Tournament. Together with sports medicine and rehabilitation experts from M Health Fairview and the University of Minnesota Medical School , Smith will provide care for youth players from nearly 1,200 participating teams.

“The USA Cup brings together athletes from all over the world, and the medical team is just as diverse—with medical students, residents, physical therapists, and athletic trainers all working together,” he said. “It’s an incredible opportunity to keep people safe while they do what they love.”

As a certified nurse midwife, Andrea Engdahl supports patients from puberty through menopause, including pregnancy and birth. Her message to patients? Trust yourself and your body.

While she’s delivered hundreds of babies, the strength and resilience of those giving birth never ceases to amaze her. “I always say, if I ever stop being amazed at this process, I would need to find a new job,” she said. Something special about her position is being present for patients in clinic and at the bedside. Engdahl shares what it's like to work as a midwife with the Star Tribune. 👉https://fv.care/3Gfi0ot

Hearing you need an angiogram might be intimidating, but our interventional cardiology team want people to know that it’s a safe and common procedure.

“People are often scared that it’s going to be painful and they’re going to have a long recovery, but it’s really quick,” said Jenny Roedl, BSN, RN- PCS/ANS, a nurse with the M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital Heart Center.

In just minutes, care teams can open arteries up with a balloon-like device, so blood flows easily again. It’s an alternative to open-heart procedures. 👉 https://fv.care/44uURpX

A nicked nerve left Olivia Hall with irreparable tendon damage and excruciating pain in her right arm. The chronic pain lasted for years, impacting every part of Hall’s life.

She finally found relief with help from Cody Tidwell, MD, a pain management expert with M Health Fairview and the University of Minnesota Medical School. Tidwell recently brought a pain clinic to Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming, Minn where he helps patients “get back into that normal motion of life.” For Hall, Tidwell’s determination and advocacy have inspired her to become an advocate for others. Visibility. Belonging. Community. Defiant joy. Over the past week, our teams shared these words again and again when describing what means to them. 🏳️‍🌈

This same spirit was on full display this weekend during Twin Cities Pride. Over 350 of our employees, volunteers, and their families marched, welcomed, cheered, and connected with the vibrant, and resilient LGBTQIA2S+ community.

Our health system was proud to once again be the presenting sponsor of Living Well Park – just as we are honored and privileged to provide care for all Minnesotans 365 days a year. Thank you to all who came out for this meaningful, moving event.

To celebrate Pride Month, our team members shared what Pride means to them. This past week, their reflections have honored visibility, affirmed belonging, and reminded us that love, joy, and solidarity are powerful forces for change.

Tomorrow, our health system proudly joins the Twin Cities Pride festival. All weekend long, we will be at Living Well Park providing health education, giveaways, healthy snacks, and an opportunity to learn from teams across our health system how we are working to improve care and wellness for our communities.

Emily Carpenter, Community Partnerships Manager, shares what Pride means to her.

“Pride is an opportunity to celebrate inclusion, belonging, and the diverse communities we serve. It’s a reminder of the importance of visibility, support, and continuing to create spaces where everyone feels respected and valued. For M Health Fairview and for me personally, showing up at Pride is a meaningful way to demonstrate our commitment to health equity and to standing with those we serve and work alongside.”
