General information
After our event, our organization visited Haiti and brought supplies to local hospitals. During our short visit, we had the opportunity to meet with Secretaire d'Etat à l'Intégration des Personnes Handicappées (SEIPH) [Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities] and noted that the social challenges were not only among the amputees, they were towards people with disabilities in general. We heard complaints that varied from humiliation to not receiving part of the distribution after the earthquake, due to their disability. The information was mind boggling and we decided to steer our focus in the same direction for all people with disability on the island of Haiti; becoming the voice of awareness. We channel the awareness of the challenges by becoming the bridge that connect the Haitian Diaspora plus others that wish to help enrich the lives of people with disabilities.

We hosted our first annual 7.0K Run/Walk for Amputees in Haiti on April 10, 2010. This event brought awareness to the Haitian Diaspora along with local communities, the need to get involved with helping the people in Haiti that has an amputation of a body part(s). The event had a very good turnout considering the fact that we planned it in 2 months. There were lots of Haitian descendants and Diaspora that wanted to help but did not know how or who to turn to give support. SAVE 509 presented to everyone, the challenges and the social disconnection people with disabilities will face due to this tragic accident; with this information the public embraced our effort of awareness.
