Often our minds are focused on what others are saying or doing, and how we need to "one-up" them to make us feel better and turn the focus back on ourselves. How often, for instance, do we need to get in the last word during a conversation or an argument? Or instead of just listening to someone intently, we look for ways to interject our own experience, or maybe even embellish it a little. Or a friend is outperforming you, and you are focused only on beating them one day soon.
It's okay to be competitive and to have drive, but not at the expense of others. A true sportsman accepts defeat and says, "The better person beat me today." Even if they knew they played poorly and feel they should have won. In fact, in any sport, event, or endeavor, there is only one "G.O.A.T." (greatest of all time), and chances are it's not you. But that's okay. If the GOAT does one thing, it should be to inspire others to their own levels of greatness.
Let's face it, you have little or no control over the GOAT. But you shouldn't let that stop you from trying to be the best YOU can be. Because what you do have is control over yourself. And the best any one of us can be, is a little bit better person than we were yesterday. And if we succeed just a little to improve ourselves each day, then how much better would we be 5, 10, 20 years down the road, and how much more positively can we be an influence to others?
