Storytime Saturdays šŸ“š

New series! On Saturdays I’ll be sharing a favorite children’s book or a simple storytime tip for building language during everyday reading.
Ever get tired of reading the same book over and over?? I do!! šŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø But…
One of the easiest ways to help children participate during reading is repetition. When kids hear the same story again and again, they start to remember the words, routines, and patterns. That gives them a chance to join in.

Try pausing before a familiar word or in the middle of a sentence, and wait a few seconds. Your child might point, gesture, add a sound, say the word, or finish the sentence.

That pause gives them space to communicate and participate.
This is a fun book that has repetition built in, new vocabulary you can talk about and silly sounds and actions you can add.
šŸ‘‡Comment STRAWBERRY and I’ll share this book we are reading. And tell me, what’s a book your child asks for on repeat? šŸ“–

Toddlers do not learn a word one time and suddenly use it forever.
They learn through repetition, imitation, and everyday play.

This simple open door puzzle gives so many chances to practice:
ā€œknock knockā€
ā€œopenā€
ā€œcloseā€
ā€œhiā€
ā€œbye byeā€
ā€œpeekaboo!ā€
+ animals, animal sounds, colors, numbers, lock/unlock….

You do not need complicated activities Repeating simple words during play helps build understanding and communication over time.

When I tell people I’m a speech language pathologist, I usually ask… do you know what that is?

If they’ve worked with one before, they get it right away.

If not, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten, ā€œsomething the blood?ā€ because of the word pathology šŸ˜…

The truth is… it’s so much more than people think.

Speech and language are just one piece of the bigger picture. It’s how your child understands the world, connects with you, and shares what’s going on inside.

Communication isn’t just talking.

It’s all the small moments that build into something bigger.

And that’s what we’re really working on.

Save this for when you start wondering if your child is on track. And send it to a parent who’s been wondering too šŸ¤

This photo was taken years ago while volunteer teaching in India.
And I didn’t realize it at the time, but this moment stayed with me.

Being surrounded by these kids…
playing, connecting, figuring out how to communicate without always sharing the same language…

It reinforced that connection always comes first.
Before words. Before progress. Before anything else.

That’s what Meraki means to me.

Doing something with your heart.
Putting love and care into the small, everyday moments.

Now, as a mom and speech therapist, that’s how I show up.

Not trying to ā€œdo it all right.ā€

Just being present.
Following a child’s lead.
Creating moments that mean something to them.

Because that’s where real learning starts.

If you’re here, I know you care deeply about your child too.
And you’re probably doing more right than you think šŸ’œ

šŸ‘‡šŸ’¬Tell me: how do you and your child enjoy connecting?

If play feels like pressure sometimes, try this…

You don’t need to come up with the ā€œperfectā€ activity.
Next time your child is playing, stop and observe.

Wait and watch to see what they’re already interested in.
Then join them.

Don’t try to teach.
Don’t change the activity.
Don’t take over.

Follow their lead in what they’re doing with the toys. Add some language to describe what they are doing. ✨ Connection builds communication.

You don’t need to come up with the ā€œperfectā€ activity.

Next time your child is playing, pause for a second.

Watch what they’re already interested in.
Then join them.

Play with whatever it is they are interested in playing. Talk about what they are doing while they do it. Wait and listen. To see if they want to engage or if they have something to show or tell you.
You don’t have to take over or teach.

Just be with them.

That’s where connection grows.
And that’s where communication starts.

Try this today and tell me what your child was playing with šŸ§øšŸš‚

Tell me your child does this too šŸ˜‚

Flips through the whole book…
then wants to ā€œreadā€ the page with all the other books.

This is the part they love. Pointing. Looking. Choosing. Commenting.

Kids are drawn to pages that are interesting, fun, and easy to interact with.
That’s what pulls them in and gives you a chance to build language.

Some books make it easy for connection and engagement.

Once you start noticing it, you’ll see exactly what your child responds to.

šŸ‘‡I put together a free list of 15 favorite books I keep coming back to because they naturally create these moments. Comment READ and I’ll send it to you šŸ“šāœØ

Want to know if your baby is on track with speech and language development?

At 4–6 months, it doesn’t sound like words,
but so much is happening

Your baby is learning:
how to use their voice
how to get your attention
how communication works

And most of it looks like:
laughing
watching you
making sounds that don’t mean anything… yet

This is the foundation for first words later on

If your baby is doing some of these, you’re right where you need to be šŸ’œ

šŸ‘‡Follow for simple, real-life ways to support your baby’s speech from the very beginning

he said ā€œyou vs me. right now.ā€ and I feel like I’d lose šŸ˜‚

the confidence
the eye contact
the fact that he already set everything up

this is also exactly how kids are when they want you to play

you’re in immediately

Has your kid ever pulled you into a game like this?
Share if you need a laugh today šŸ˜‚šŸ‘‡

This is one of my favorite ways to build early communication… songs and people games šŸ‘¶šŸ»

Songs like this aren’t just fun.
They teach your baby how back-and-forth works.

You move
You pause
They respond

That pause…That’s where communication starts.

And you just need your voice, your face, and a little wait time.

Try this today and watch what your baby does in that pause šŸ‘€

Save this so you remember to try it later and tell me, what is your favorite people game to do with your child?

You finally get them down for a nap…(or so you think)
and suddenly it’s a full performance šŸŽ¤

No sleep. Instead, animals on the bed, a stool brought over and music turned on. Just Wheels on the Bus, into If You’re Happy and You Know It, and never actually in bed.

But here’s the thing I always remind parents…

This is learning.

Songs like this are doing so much behind the scenes:
• building vocabulary
• teaching actions + meaning
• helping them connect words to movement
• practicing rhythm and memory

And the gestures? That’s communication too.

So yes… you can laugh (or cry a little because nap didn’t happen šŸ˜…)

But this is exactly how language grows in real life.

Save this so you remember that learning is happening even when it feels chaotic šŸ¤

And tell me, does your toddler perform instead of sleep too? šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«
