"So, why is updating our clinical verbiage important? Because it can validate neurodivergent identities. It is an action in dismantling systems of oppression. It can help us provide accurate descriptions of a child's strengths, challenges, and supports.

And it centers the perspectives of the communities we serve.

And last, it directly affects the families we serve. A study by Steiner in 2011 found that when early intervention service providers used affirming language during parent coaching, that parents had more positive feelings about their child's diagnoses, and it actually increased affection and connection between the parents and their children.”
