September 11, 2001 started like any other day, but it quickly became one of the most devastating days in American history. The terrorist attacks claimed thousands of innocent lives and shook our nation to its core.

However, the aftermath also showed us the best of humanity. We saw people from all walks of life coming together, helping each other, and showing extraordinary courage through unity. As the Bible says, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Today, we take a moment to remember the victims, honor the heroes of all types, and reflect on the resilience of our nation.

September is Su***de Prevention Month.
Every life matters. Every story matters. You matter.

If you or someone you know is struggling, you are not alone. Help is always available.
📞 Dial 988 to be connected with the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.

Together, let’s help one another, spread awareness, and remind our community that support is only a call away.

First responders face a higher risk of su***de than the general population. Day after day, they witness tragedy, trauma, and loss while carrying the expectation to stay strong for others. Add to that long hours, high stress, and stigma around asking for help—and the weight becomes overwhelming. These factors make first responders more likely to suffer in silence. But no one should fight that battle alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, please dial 988.

As the new school year begins, let’s all do our part to keep our children, families, and communities safe. Whether you’re a parent, student, teacher, or driver, all these reminders matter:

School Zone Safety: Slow down, stay alert, and follow posted speed limits.

School Bus Awareness: Never pass a bus with flashing red lights and expect frequent stops.

Pedestrian Safety: Watch for children at crosswalks and corners.

Traffic Delays: Plan ahead for longer commute times around school zones.

Distracted Driving: Stay off your phone and keep your focus on the road.

Mental Health: Check in with your kids—this time of year can be stressful for many.

Nutrition & Routine: Encourage balanced meals, proper sleep, and daily routines.

Heads up, scattered showers and possibly storms are expected to roll through our area by the end of the week. Rain chances are on the rise, and some heavier downpours could bring localized flooding, especially in low-lying or poorly drained spots. This wet weather is being fueled in part by a tropical system forming in the Gulf of America. While it’s too early to know exactly how it’ll develop, it could bring more rain and stormy conditions into the weekend.

Now’s a good time to prep just in case; check drains, avoid driving through high water, and stay weather-aware.

Stay safe and check in on neighbors who may need a hand if storms pick up.

As we commemorate this Independence Day, the Jasper County Emergency Response Team urges everyone to observe the holiday in a safe and responsible manner.
While you’re spending time with family, attending fireworks shows, or grilling out in the backyard, here are a few reminders to help maintain community safety:
Fireworks Safety: Leave fireworks to the professionals. Never allow young children to handle fireworks. Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of fire. Heat & Hydration: Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Be mindful of signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Water Safety: Always supervise children near pools or open water. Wear a life jacket when boating or swimming in deep water.
Travel & Driving: Never drink and drive, designate a sober driver. Expect increased traffic and use extra caution on the road.
Our JCERT volunteers remain ready to respond around the clock. We’re here if you need us, but we’d rather see you safe and enjoying the 4th!

When you see flashing lights on the roadside — whether red for EMS and fire, or blue for law enforcement — it’s not just courtesy, it’s the law: slow down and move over.

But that’s not all — when emergency vehicles are actively responding with lights and sirens, pull over to the right and stop safely. Let them pass so they can reach the emergency quickly and safely.

📌 These simple actions save lives:
• Emergency responders work just feet from moving traffic.
• Yielding helps emergency crews arrive faster — and could mean the difference between life and death.
• Some Responders drive civilian vehicles without obvious markings. If you see flashing lights, treat it seriously.

Respect the lights. Respect the lives. Move over. Yield early. Arrive Alive!!!

As summer is infull swing, we want to remind everyone of some crucial lawn care safety tips and health precautions to keep you, your family, and your neighbors safe.

✅ Lawnmower Safety Tips:
• Never use your hands to clear debris from the mower.
• Keep all safety guards and switches in place.
• Only mow when the ground is dry, and wear protective gear like goggles and closed-toe shoes.
• Do not allow children near an active mower.
• NEVER operate a mower while under the influence of alcohol.

🚫 Most importantly, DO NOT blow grass clippings or trimmings into the roadway, especially in hills and or curves.
Loose grass in the road can be extremely hazardous for motorcyclists, off road vehicles and bicyclists, causing loss of traction and serious crashes. Always direct clippings back toward your lawn or into a proper disposal area.

🔥 Summer Health Precautions:
• Stay hydrated and take breaks in shaded or cool areas.
• Avoid mowing during the peak heat of the day (usually 10 AM - 4 PM).
• Use sunscreen, and wear light, breathable clothing.
• Be alert for signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, and fatigue.

Let’s all do our part to keep our lawns neat, our streets safe, and our neighbors healthy. Your attention to these details can prevent serious injury and help everyone enjoy the summer safely!
