🏫✨ Bishop Toolen High School — A Legacy of Catholic Education in Mobile ✨🏫
Did you know that one of Mobile’s iconic Catholic high schools was named in honor of Bishop Thomas J. Toolen, who served as Bishop of Mobile for nearly four decades?
📍 Bishop Toolen High School, located on Catherine Street at Old Shell Road, was opened in 1937 as an all-girls Catholic high school. Its creation was part of Bishop Toolen’s broader vision to expand Catholic education across Mobile and the Gulf Coast.
🔑 Key highlights:
Toolen High School became the first Catholic girls' high school in Mobile, built shortly after Bishop Toolen became bishop.
The modern facility accommodated hundreds of students and included classrooms, science labs, and recreational areas.
This campus complemented McGill Institute, the all-boys school built earlier — together forming the backbone of Catholic secondary education in Mobile.
The article also highlights the growth of St. Mary’s Parish School, which added new school facilities in 1952 to accommodate over 700 students — showing the rapid growth of Catholic education in the city during that era.
🎠And in true Catholic community spirit, Bishop Toolen organized a Diocesan Pageant, where hundreds of Mobile schoolchildren depicted the history of the Diocese of Mobile through costumes, song, and narration.
Over 25 years, Bishop Toolen and the Catholic Diocese built 22 new churches, schools, and charitable institutions, helping shape Mobile’s spiritual and educational landscape.
This chapter of Mobile history reminds us how faith, community, and education came together to shape generations of Mobilians.
