Surviving Broken Brains and Broken Hearts I am the caretaker of my daughter, a brain injury survivor. I also struggle with mental health issues including anxiety and depression.

I am a mom on the doorstep of bein an empty nester, or I was, until my daughter had an aneurysm which left her with disabilities that require her to have constant supervision. I'm a planner, a professional, and I have earned both a bachelor's and master's degree, but I also suffer from panic attacks, had a mental breakdown, and continue to struggle with mental health issues. I have a miracle child, and I am a Christian, but I also have days when I feel totally disconnected from God. I guess all of this makes me a human.

Today I shared the story of my time at Robert Young - a local mental health facility - where I learned how to function again after my daughter's near death experience turned my world upside down.

Date night didn't happen because we went to a movie on Tuesday night instead. That was the first of many exciting adventures we had this week. We enjoyed a walk at Vander Veere park on Saturday, and I filled my mailbox planter. I also went into a panic attack in the middle of my kitchen on Saturday, because suddenly it all just became too much. I found a quiet spot to breathe, and although I really wanted to quit making brownies with Emily and curl up into a ball for the rest of the night, I pushed myself back into the kitchen and finished the brownies...then I gave up.

One of my coping mechanisms is to have a weekly mother- daughter date night. Each week we go to a restaurant that starts with our letter of the week. This week we went to Quad-City Pizza Co. This routine forces both of us out of our comfort zone and helps us learn how to function in a variety of environments. The food was delicious. The sausage pizza is my favorite. It's easy for someone with limited mobility to navigate. Brain injury survivors tend to get stuck in patterns, so this is a good activity for broken brains. Next we will go somewhere that starts with the letter R...any guesses?

This page is for all the people who woke up one day and found themselves suddenly living a life they didn't recognize. In 2021, my 18 year old daughter had a brain aneurysm, and I spent months trying to wake up from the nightmare that had become my actual life. This page is a project that I've been thinking about launching for over a year, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it until now. So, here it is. A place for people to just share challenges of living the life they never expected to live due to some unforeseen challenge or trauma. It's a work in progress, but there will never be the day where I have it all together and I know what I'm doing, so I decided to make today the day.
