Stress affects all of us, and taking care of our mental health starts with understanding how we cope and how we care for ourselves. Self-care and mindfulness are not luxuries—they are practical, everyday tools that help reduce stress, manage emotions, and support overall well-being. From getting enough rest and moving our bodies, to building supportive relationships and practicing mindfulness in the moment, small intentional actions can make a meaningful difference.

Like therapy, mental health medications are often stigmatized. It's not uncommon to hear someone say that medication is for people who are weak and lazy, but in reality medications help people function and thrive.

What are they?
There are 5 main categories: antidepressants, anti-anxiety, anti-psychotics, stimulants (for conditions like ADHD and narcolepsy), and mood stabilizers.

Do I really need medications?
Talking to a psychiatrist can help you decide. You can try them out and if something isn't working you can always adjust the dose or switch types.
- It's important to be patient: mental health medications can take weeks or months to fully start working.
- Make sure you are consistently taking your medication and never stop cold turkey as some medications need to be weened off slowly.

What about side effects? Will I have to take them forever?
Side effects do happen, but they can often be managed by adjusting your prescription. Meds aren't a cure-all, they work best alongside therapy or other mental healthcare to help you manage stress. If you have chronic or more severe mental health conditions, you may need to take medications for a long time or for life. Whether you need them for a few months or forever, being on a medication is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign that you are taking care of yourself and getting the support you need.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about therapy that keeps people from seeking treatment, for example that therapy is too expensive and is a waste of money because you just "talk about your feelings".

So what is therapy?
- Therapy is a problem-solving tool that helps you cope with and recover from specific issues related to stress and/or trauma. It helps you help yourself. There are many different types of therapies not just talk-therapies: https://www.healthline.com/health/types-of-therapy

How do I know if I need therapy?
- If it helps, it helps. You can always talk to a psychologist or a therapist to see if it would be beneficial and try it out; you don't need to be severely mentally ill to receive care nor do you need to commit to a long-term schedule. Sometimes all you need is a couple of sessions.

Will therapy fix everything?
- No, it will not magically fix everything, but it can help you identify problems and come up with solutions which can reduce stress and help you feel better. It can take several sessions to figure out what therapeutic approaches work best and to find a therapist you click with; and it's important to remember, like with all types of healing, sometimes you will feel worse before you feel better.
