The daylight hours are getting shorter here in North America. It's a good time to catch a sunset solo or with a friend or loved one.

Did you know that making a habit of watching sunsets has health benefits?

It's been correlated with reducing stress and boosting our mood. And it can help us get a better night's sleep by helping regulate circadian rhythms.

Plus, there's a boost in "feel good" neural transmitters as our minds and bodies respond to states of awe.

So, get out there and catch some sunsets. Take a moment to slow down, unplug, and tune into your senses.

I'm currently reading How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell and woke up this morning thinking again about how we listen. Beyond hearing, listening is an art and skill set.

We can choose a quality of attention by which we listen. Are we listening to defend our values or story, or are we listening for understanding? Are we listening with a closed heart or open heart? Are we listening to the words or for their deeper meaning? Are we listening with impatience or curiosity?
With so many choices, I find the act of listening to be an on-going opportunity for exploring and a form of spiritual practice.

Some days and situations are easier than others for intentional listening. One of my favorite questions to ask is, “What's important right now?” It tends to give me just enough space to choose how to show up as an imperfect listener who is intending to be more present, open, compassionate, and curious.

What do you notice about how you listen these days?

Enculturated Zoochosis: A Metaphor for Grounding Clinical Practice in Ecopsychotherpy- Natasha Morisawa, LMFT

June 3rd from 6:00 – 7:00 PM PT

With the work of Vaughan Wilkins as an inspirational springboard, let’s discuss ways in which our practices of psychotherapy may be grounded in intentionality, reciprocal relationship, and dynamic balance. Whether you are familiar with Ecopsychology and want to integrate it into practice or are simply curious about the emerging field of Ecopsychotherapy, join us in sharing ideas and creating invitations to integrate these concepts.

Natasha passionately believes we can have healthier and more compassionate relationships with ourselves, our loved ones, our communities, and other-than-human-nature. For over a decade she has been a Marriage and Family Therapist and Clinical Supervisor in private practice and is the current Executive Director of The Place Within- Southern California, a non-profit community mental health center in Monrovia, CA. She is a Certified Labyrinth Facilitator and has post-graduate certificates in Ecopsychology and Advanced Ecotherapy with a special interest in trauma recovery and Eco-spirituality. When she’s not in therapy sessions or facilitating workshops, she enjoys starting new creative projects, intentionally exploring nature through photography, sharing books, music, and ideas with friends, and eating soup.

What's looking like my annual posting on YouTube, you can find an offering for this year's World Labyrinth Day.

This year's post offers a guided meditation and an invitation to walk a handheld labyrinth with links in the description to download a labyrinth app or a printable document. Of course, you can take this on your local labyrinth walk experience as well!

The theme of the guided meditation is covered in a brief talk based on the work of Joanna Macy and how we can live consciously through these uncertain times. A set of journal prompts are available if you want to further your contemplation.

Find the YouTube link in the bio.

Enjoy and share!

Returning back from my recent trip and starting to integrate the experiences into my present day life. The view of Mt Fuji is such an iconic familiar feature, and yet being in closer proximity to it was pure awe impacted by the context of the land and culture I'm viewing it from. And it's a great metaphor for allowing perspective to inform our relationship with people, places, and ourselves.

I'm full of gratitude for family, colleagues, and dear friends who support me on my journeys in many diverse and important ways. You held space, watered plants, fed cats, cared for each other, provided supervision, crisis coverage, and administrative support. Thank you!!

Getting to visit land and places with family where our ancestors came from was fascinating and makes me even more curious about relationships, generational trauma, and what happens when we get disconnected from culture and place.

Pondering this quote today from Resmaa Menakem:

“Trauma decontextualized in a person looks like personality. Trauma decontextualized in a family looks like family traits. Trauma decontextualized in people looks like culture.”

Earth Day greetings, We're taking a moment to check in with our relationship with this planet, this Mother Rock, the one home we all share, and the interconnectedness of all of its places and beings.

On this day there's appreciation and celebration for the beauty and life-giving parts of it all, and there's deep aching sorrow for the changes to the planet impacting us all.

It's challenging and yet so important to be with those feelings today and everyday because they're information on what's important to us individually and collectively. They anchor us in our choices on a daily basis and inspire us to reconnect to what really matters.

How's your relationship with the planet today? What are you grateful for? What could be going better? How might you make changes that matter moving forward?
