Montclair March Mathness - Empower Girls Through Math

Montclair March Mathness - Empower Girls Through Math The town-wide celebration of math will run from March 1-16, 2013, featuring events designed to engage girls and their parents in learning more about math.

It's a celebration of Math in Montclair! Montclair March Mathness was first celebrated in March of 2012 with fun, math-centric events for elementary, middle school and high school girls and boys, their parents and educators. This year we are bringing back many of the same exciting events and introducing new ones including:

An OPENING NIGHT screening of "Wonder Women - The Untold Story of American Superheroines"

Pi Day Calculation Celebration with pizza and engaging, hands-on activities to discover how to arrive at PI - infinitely fun! PI Day Pajama Party introducing kids and their parents to Bedtime Math
Middle School Math Bee where teams compete for prizes - it's like Jeopardy with math questions. Robotics Demonstration and introduction to FIRST Robotics Competition and the Lego League. Hands-on robotic surgery demonstration at Mountainside Hospital with dinner and discussion. Female Math and Science Pioneers book club event. Math and music at School of Rock and Little Kids Rock ... and much more! It all adds up to fun and experiential learning. Here's how you can get involved:

* Organize your own math-centric event - contact us for help!
* Have an event produced at your school, business or public space.
* Volunteer your time to help manage an existing event.
* Contribute financially to our mission to encourage girls and young women to pursue STEM careers.
* REGISTER your daughters! Montclair March Mathness is sponsored by The Athena Collaborative [http://www.athenacollaborative.org/], an organization that empowers girls and young women to pursue STEM careers - careers in science, technology, engineering and math. In "The Dip" Seth Godin defines the "Dip" as the long stretch between beginner's luck and real accomplishment. He writes, "If you took organic chemistry in college, you've experienced the dip. Academia doesn't want unmotivated people to attend medical school, so they set up a screen. Organic chemistry is the killer class, the screen that separates the doctors from the others."

74% of teen girls are interested in STEM careers, but only 25% wind of in these careers. The dip is worse for girls. Montclair March Mathness: Helping our girls get beyond the dip!
