If you’re a parent, you’ve heard it over and over from pediatricians, teachers, and specialists: reading books with your children is one of the best things you can do for their development. It fosters not only speech and language development, but also social emotional learning, cognitive development, and literacy skills.
But we know how life gets to be hectic, and understand how tiring it can be to just get through the day-to-day happenings. And before you know it - the kids are in bed and you didn’t get around to reading with them (again!). (I, Wendy, have been there many times). That’s why we want to recommend some quick, truly ENJOYABLE reads for those times when it feels extra hard to make the time and space.
Here are some fun ones I like both as a parent and as a speech therapist: Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems, Where is Baby’s… books by Karen Katz, Pete the Cat books by Eric Litwin, Pig the Pug books by Aaron Blabey, and Sandra Boynton books.
Pick a book that is fun for YOU! Your kids will likely sense your joy and follow along. And at the end of it all, be gentle with yourself if you don’t always get to it. You’re doing great.
Let us know some books you and the kids in your life enjoy! :)
