Body Transcendence by Jill Branch Structural Integration, Movement Education, Guided Movement Meditations Structural Integration is a system of bodywork created by Dr. Ida Rolf.

The goal is to organize and balance the body by manipulating the body's fascial system. Fascia governs how muscles, bones and joints function, defining their usable range of motion. Through a series of sessions, the entire fascial matrix is addressed, head to toe, creating greater balance, alignment, ease of movement and overall function of the entire body.

"There is only one pattern in which the body can be aligned so that gravity can pull symmetrically." - Dr. Ida Rolf

A balanced arm pattern is when they hang along the midline of the torso with the elbow points facing laterally, elbow creases facing the torso, and the palms resting toward the thighs.

A common imbalanced arm pattern is where the elbows point back, elbow creases point forward, and palms are face up. This posture is trained by many modalities for various reasons. It is also the neutral representation of the body in anatomical position.

In this arm position, the arm bones are rotated so they no longer sit properly in the shoulder joints. They get rotated up and in. Over time, that changes the structure and leads to symptoms caused by compression of the muscles, bone and nerves in the shoulders, neck, head, spine, back, and down the arms.

By derotating the arms and unwinding the fascial and muscular tension patterns so the elbow points go lateral, symptoms can resolve and structural balance can be had.

My clients are usually surprised when they hear muscles weren't a part of my structural integration training. Muscles seem like they'd be a necessary component of any apprenticeship in physical balance. Instead, my teacher introduced us to what he called cylinder theory. It was a way of viewing the body as a collection of cylinder shapes. The arm cylinder connected to the torso cylinder, the neck cylinder connected to the rib cylinders, the spine, the arm, the leg...all cylinders.

Though I didn't know it at the time, the cylinder model was developing the right side of my brain - I was learning to understand the body holistically. This was in stark contrast to everything I had learned in school...

At the time, I was also reading Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. Everything she was describing was how we learned to see a human body. I talk more about it in the full article but definitely a book I would recommend to anyone who has or wants to train in structural integration or any physical modality. In our left brain dominated world, this is a phenomenal book for training the right side of your brain and building new neural connections.

Anyone who's been in pain knows it impacts every aspect of your life, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Being in pain for 30 years certainly had taken its toll on this client.

Watching his transformation through the SI process was beautiful. By the 3rd session, he came in whistling and by the 7th, he was out of orthotics and wearing barefoot shoes!

Our shoes affect our structure more than we realize.

That's why it's especially important for babies and children to wear soft, flat, unrestricted shoes when shoes are necessary. It lets the feet develop naturally. The arches can strengthen and the ankles and toes can maintain movement freedom and flexibility.

Adults, it's not hopeless. Your feet can get back to moving naturally too. Structural integration can help your feet feel comfortable and secure WITHOUT cushions or arch support from your shoes.
