“It’s like a sauna in here.”

That’s a joke my mom makes every.single.time. she’s in a sauna.

Sauna temps range from about 140° to more than 200°.

The high heat can boost the heart rate and send blood around the body more efficiently.

It can help relax muscles and help your body release heat-shock proteins to reduce inflammation.

That heat can also dry out your hair and make your ears hot.

Hence, the sauna hat. Usually made of wool, linen, or cotton, this covering protects the top of the head, including the hair, from heat damage.

It can also catch some of the sweat from getting in your eyes.

Pro tip: after one or two cycles in the sauna, I saturate mine in frigid water and let that water drip down for the next sessions.

That helps me hang out long enough to get the benefits for when it’s like a sauna in there.

I’m big on productive rest, because I believe in the value of hard work.

In that way that I learned and practice yoga, we are meant to be our best selves so that we can best be in service to others.

It’s National Sauna Week.

We are so down with this.

Events this week:

It’s time for our monthly collaboration with YUJ Yoga.
Sauna + Yoga Nidra, or “yoga napping.”
How’d it go last time, you ask?

That’s this Thursday at 7 pm

On Saturday, we’re wrapping up our Sauna and Pain Relief series.
Enjoy a sauna and yoga class with small therapy balls.
It’s like stretching and getting a massage at the same time.

Saturday, 1-3 pm

Both classes are on the special events section of our website.

Don’t forget, it’s Bring a Friend February all month long for our social sauna sessions.

We launched Bring a Friend February last week.
The goal was simple: make it easier for friends to have fun together.

Sold the first tickets within minutes of the email blast.

Boom. My work is done.

Except it wasn’t. Not even close.

My client showed up with a friend who was going through some stuff. I overheard her say,
“Ashley teaches this incredible breathwork and meditation. She’ll be with you every step of the way.”

I immediately held my breath. I was prepared for a lightweight social gathering at the studio.
These are the sessions I don’t facilitate.
I don’t teach. I don’t hold space. Hell, sometimes I join the party.

That day I was tired. I’d had two vendor shows and five studio events in four days.
I was behind on emails and hadn’t had a vegetable in days.

I just wanted to get paid.

I ended up holding that woman’s hand—and her gaze—as she trembled. Her body shook as she processed.
I had to remind myself to breathe while showing her how to.

She looked up at me at the end, near tears and couldn’t believe what had just happened.

I am a trauma-informed instructor. I came to my work by way of trauma.
I was looking for natural ways to work through depression and anxiety after abuse.
That and the trappings of winter; joint pain, fatigue, under exercising and over TVing, and on and on and on.

Over the years, I’ve learned to remember the bodymind’s incredible intelligence.

My work gets real. Really real. And it’s the honor of a lifetime.

So to my client…thank you for bringing a friend.
