Posture is one of the ways our body speaks to us. Have you ever noticed the posture shifts that happen when you’re stressed? How about when you’re frustrated?… Joyful?

Each emotion has a postural shape that embodies the feeling. When you’re carrying stress, frustration, there’s a good chance your upper back feels tense as your shoulders cave in. When you’re feeling like you don’t have support, your lower back may be achy from holding it all in yourself.

These are the stories your body holds through the pattern of tension. It speaks about the emotional tension you hold inside. Part of the reason why massage is so helpful is that it unravels these tension patterns, which helps to shift the internal emotional feeling.

As a somatic wellness center, we focus on mind, body, and spirit as it relates to emotional health. Holding space becomes more about a felt sense of safety so the body can unravel from the nervous system patterns creating tension. Most often I hear, "what should I schedule?" So, let me share a little more about these sessions.

Integrative Therapeutic Massage- This is an all-in-one massage sessions that utilizes whatever modalities or tools are needed. It could be myofascial release, it could be cupping, it could be some deep trigger point release. The session depends on what the body needs at the time. This may also include medical/clinical massage.

Somatic Bodywork- This session is paced to meet the needs of the nervous system, following a nervous system first approach. This may vary from slow, holding points for heightened awareness with gentle guidance, to allow for unraveling of the tension, or it may include guided neuromuscular somatic reset to release chronic tension patterns with a more activating approach to find regulation in the system.

Somatic Yoga Therapy- Offered weekly or as a private class, this session helps to unwind tension and quiet the mind, bringing the body back into balance. From somatic reset movements, to titrated activation and relaxation practices, it helps you find inner balance and peace. Specializing in working with mental health conditions such as: anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, and more.

Shamanic Reiki- Brings together shamanic healing practices and Reiki energy healing for a powerful session offering clearing/cleansing of the energy field, empowerment and balance of the energy centers, journeying, sound healing, and more. You can choose from energy healing or combine with massage for the best of both worlds to truly harmonize your spirit.

SoulWise Coaching- If you're looking for somatic based guidance, practices, and healing from a different perspective, SoulWise Somatic Coaching offers just that. We focus on the felt sensations and experiences in the body, to release the stored emotion and trauma still taking root in the nervous system responses. Together we'll explore practices to help you navigate your nervous system, to bring peace back to your life.

There's a misconception about massage.
Deeper does not = better. In fact, deeper actually makes tension worse. You know those moments when a therapist is "digging in" and your body is instinctively tightening, that's bracing. It's a protective mechanism to minimize damage. It creates more tension, not less. It's great to keep you coming back, but doesn't actually resolve your issues. It doesn't stop the tension pattern, it creates more.

Now imagine a softening. A gentle, yet steady holding that isn't forcing, but rather it awakens communication within the system. You feel twinges in the muscle as it begins to melt like butter. No force, just allowing the body to do what it naturally wants to do, heal itself. The pattern begins to unwind. There's space within the mind to process the holding and attachments to feelings that arise. And there's a release that lasts as the cycle is disrupted and the pattern has changed.

That's the difference between an experienced, skilled bodyworker and someone caught up in the no pain, no gain mindset. We do the deep work where the body allows, moving at the pace needed for the unraveling to happen. The benefits of the session last easily twice as long.

When I first started my journey in the massage profession I was already a holistic practitioner.

Herbalism
Aromatherapy
Crystal healing
Reflexology
Reiki
Meditation

These were already my primary practices. I thought my journey in the massage field was going to go much different than it did. Instead I found myself astonished at the capacity of massage to relieve chronic pain and help people regain mobility. It propelled me on a far different journey.

Right out of massage school in 2004, I jumped into learning trigger point therapy bc I had experienced how debilitating trigger points can be and what happens when they aren’t addressed.

Then came Neuromuscular Therapy, specializing in the neck and shoulders bc a majority of clients suffered with upper body pain and dysfunction. Later, specializing in whiplash and working in chiropractic office to support the recovery from motor vehicle accidents.

It wasn’t until I made the scary leap of starting my own practice that I learned the biggest piece of the puzzle of bodywork. I was working with a client recovering from an accident. I did all the clinical applications, followed treatment protocols, and utilized every tool I thought would help from the clinical side of massage.

But I had a huge realization…

What she needed wasn’t a clinical session. The guarding, tension, and response was from an emotional trigger and I knew in that moment what was needed was a blend of the holistic practices and clinical application. This wasn’t something talked about in our field at the time. From that point on I understood and respected the delicate balance required for real healing. One that embraces the mind & spirit, just as much as the body.

That was 2010. And I’ve been continuing to work that way ever since, offering blended sessions and breaking out of the often limited boxed in menu of traditional massage, providing openness in the session to work with the unique body on the table, weaving all aspects of the self- mind, emotion, body and spirit. My somatic work began long before my somatic training. It was intuitive, ingrained from the path I travelled.

This is why somatic practices mean so much to me. It’s the piece of the puzzle that is so often overlooked or misunderstood. It’s the explanation of why deep tissue doesn’t actually fix your problem (it’s not because you need more). A deep dive into understanding the nervous system will quickly provide the pathway of treatment. Our nervous system is our control panel.

If you’re a therapist and would like to learn more in-depth about nervous system function in relation to bodywork, I invite you to our online webinar, Creating a Trauma-Informed Practice, to learn applied Polyvagal Theory through the lens of bodywork so you can better yourself as a practitioner and space holder.

My Mission

I’m a huge advocate for self-care because self-care is the ultimate form of self-love. In today’s fast paced society we tend to neglect ourselves for the needs of others on a daily basis. It will inevitably take its toll. You will never receive ‘just’ a massage from me. My purpose in business from the very beginning was to help people understand the connection of the mind, body & spirit and the role it plays in their health. This deeper somatic connection lead me to truly being able to help others awaken to their fullest potential by releasing blocks in the mental, physical and emotional layers of the body, enabling you to feel empowered and inspired to put your best self forward.
