For a WVU education alum and children’s book author, whimsy nurtures learning.

“'I don’t believe any child can’t handle a word,' he said. 'A word that a kid doesn’t know is just a word that a kid doesn’t know yet.'”

Nate Whiting, an education alum of West Virginia University, has always loved writing poems that make kids laugh, but with the help of his wife, he has now published a series of whimsical books for kids.

WVU roboticist Yu Gu lets his curiosity lead him — all the way to outer space.

"A professor in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering at the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, Gu calls himself a 'life tourist,' and curiosity is his way of looking at robots and the world."

Yu Gu has designed robots that weigh mere ounces, and some that weigh hundreds of pounds. With his students at West Virginia University, Gu has created autonomous robots that operate independently, as well as ones that “swarm” together.

WVU to continue with normal operations Wednesday (Jan. 28)

In the aftermath of a winter storm packing snow and ice, West Virginia University will continue normal operations on the Morgantown Campus Wednesday (Jan. 28) after reopening at 5 p.m. Tuesday night (Jan. 27).

Members of the University community are advised to use caution as they venture out into wintry conditions.

Supervisors and faculty members are encouraged to provide flexibility, where possible, to employees and students who may have trouble traveling to campus.

Since the weekend, WVU Facilities Management Roads and Grounds crews have been working to clear and treat campus roads, parking lots, sidewalks, stairs and other areas.

“The amount of ice accumulation has continued to be a challenge,” Charles “Chuck” Roberts, associate vice president for Facilities Operations, said.

“We will remain focused on high traffic areas across the Morgantown Campus, but our students, faculty and staff should be prepared to deal with winter conditions when walking or driving.”
