Ferocious Readers' Center for Struggling and Dyslexic Students Dyslexia is not due to either lack of intelligence or desire to learn; with appropriate teaching meth

What is Dyslexia?
“Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. Dyslexia refers to a cluster of symptoms, which result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading. Students with dyslexia usually experience difficulties with other language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words. Dyslexia affects individuals throughout their lives; however, its impact can change at different stages in a person’s life.

We are less than 3 weeks away from our next Parent and Family Support Group!
Cynthia Glenn is the Principal of the Pittsburgh New Church School for children with dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. The research on math instruction is way behind reading research and the field of OG math is in its infant stage. Cyndi is thrilled to be on the front lines of math research for children with dyscalculia and is excited to share the current research and teaching strategies for helping kids who struggle with math. Join us on January 18 to learn about how to identify red flags of dyscalculia, how to find resources for your child, what accommodations to ask for at school, and most of all how to provide help at home.

Sign up for January 18th's free, virtual support group from 7-8pm at pbida.org

Each month we are introducing you to one of our board members. All of whom volunteer their time to PBIDA to help support our mission. We are thankful for all that they do!

Georgette Helbling has dedicated her life to supporting dyslexic individuals and their families. Currently serving her second term as a PBIDA (Pennsylvania Branch of the International Dyslexia Association) Board member, Georgette holds the position of chairperson for the 2023 Fall conference.
Georgette's personal journey began two decades ago when she attended her first PBIDA conference driven by her desire to help her two dyslexic sons. At that event, PBIDA provided her with the tools and knowledge to become an advocate for her children and inspired her to extend that assistance to other families facing similar challenges.
Building upon her experiences and passion, Georgette established her own nonprofit organization called the Ferocious Readers' Center for Struggling & Dyslexic Students. Through this organization, she aims to bring her vision of helping dyslexic children to life, offering them the support and resources they need to thrive.
Georgette has acquired several certifications to enhance her expertise in dyslexia and reading instruction. She holds a Dyslexia Specialist certification from the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), which signifies her deep understanding of dyslexia and its interventions. Additionally, Georgette is a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) recognized by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA). Her Reading Specialist Certification further solidifies her knowledge and qualifications in the field.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Georgette enjoys various hobbies during her spare time such as gardening, music, and long walks.

Letter Reversals beyond 1st Grade

Letter reversals such as b and d and p and q beyond 1st grade are a characteristic of children who struggle due to dyslexia.

Avoid the wait and see approach
“Let’s just wait and see how he/she does next year”

Children’s academic windows are not life long and we must address the needs of students when they present themselves.

There are laws written to protect students with disabilities, yet not all educators follow the laws. Unfortunately, students with hidden disabilities are ignored or minimized by educators. If your child is struggling in school academically or emotionally, it may be related to an invisible disability. Getting support from services outside the school can provide you with insight into your child’s needs.

(Image: a child in a wheelchair with a backpack and school books looking up toward large stairs with the school on top. A quote from Dr. Jill Lam~“Not all disabilities are visible. Hidden conditions such as ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, Autism, anxiety, and depression are disabilities in the education setting. Allowing a student with a hidden disability to struggle when all that is needed for success are appropriate accommodations, and explicit instruction is no different than failing to provide a ramp for a person in a wheelchair.”)
