Public Safety Notification
This morning, the Elkin Police Department received a voicemail message via Hugh Chatham Hospital indicating a vague threat of a potential shooting at a “field day event” occurring today. The Surry County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with Elkin PD and other local agencies, has thoroughly investigated all known events scheduled for today.
Out of an abundance of caution, patrol presence has been increased around all local events, and all city and county law enforcement agencies have been made aware of the situation.
In recent hours, our office has begun receiving numerous calls from concerned citizens who have heard different versions of this rumor, some suggesting threats directed at local daycares. At this time, there is no credible or specific threat directed toward any daycare facility or location. Nevertheless, patrol deputies are actively checking in with local daycares to provide reassurance and ensure continued public safety.
We want to emphasize that the original threat appears to be unfounded, but we take all reports seriously and continue to monitor the situation closely. Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt stated, “The safety of our citizens, especially our children, remains our top priority.”
If you see something suspicious, please contact our office at 336-401-8900 or dial 911 in an emergency.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
