Public Safety Notification

This morning, the Elkin Police Department received a voicemail message via Hugh Chatham Hospital indicating a vague threat of a potential shooting at a “field day event” occurring today. The Surry County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with Elkin PD and other local agencies, has thoroughly investigated all known events scheduled for today.

Out of an abundance of caution, patrol presence has been increased around all local events, and all city and county law enforcement agencies have been made aware of the situation.

In recent hours, our office has begun receiving numerous calls from concerned citizens who have heard different versions of this rumor, some suggesting threats directed at local daycares. At this time, there is no credible or specific threat directed toward any daycare facility or location. Nevertheless, patrol deputies are actively checking in with local daycares to provide reassurance and ensure continued public safety.

We want to emphasize that the original threat appears to be unfounded, but we take all reports seriously and continue to monitor the situation closely. Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt stated, “The safety of our citizens, especially our children, remains our top priority.”

If you see something suspicious, please contact our office at 336-401-8900 or dial 911 in an emergency.

Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.

Each July, we honor the legacy of author, advocate, and trailblazer Bebe Moore Campbell by recognizing Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month (also referred to as BIPOC Mental Health Month). Moore Campbell’s ability to tell impactful stories highlighting themes of racism, mental health, and family left a lasting mark on this world and is a foundation for much of the work that continues in support of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) mental health.

Memorial Day is a profound occasion that serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by brave men and women in service to our country. It's a day to reflect on the human costs of war, express gratitude for those who gave their lives, and acknowledge the lasting impact on their families, friends, and communities.

The Significance of Memorial Day

Honoring the Fallen: Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
Reflecting on Sacrifices: It's a time to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifices made by service members and the profound losses experienced by their loved ones.
Supporting Mental Health: Memorial Day also highlights the importance of supporting the mental health of veterans, who often face unique challenges such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and substance use disorders.

Mental Health Considerations

Grief and Trauma: Losing a loved one in military service can lead to complex emotional and psychological challenges, including grief, trauma, anxiety, and depression.
Support Systems: It's crucial to recognize and validate these emotions and seek support from professionals, support groups, or loved ones.
Resources: Organizations like the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline (988) and the Department of Veterans Affairs offer essential services and support for veterans and their families.

Ways to Show Reverence

Participate in Memorial Activities:

- Attend Memorial Day parades or ceremonies
- Visit cemeteries or war memorials
- Engage in acts of remembrance, such as lighting candles or writing letters to fallen soldiers' families
Support Veterans:

- Donate to reputable charities that support veterans' mental health and well-being
- Volunteer with organizations that provide services for veterans and their families
- Offer a listening ear to veterans and their loved ones
Prioritize Mental Health:

- Practice self-care and stress management techniques
- Seek professional help when needed
- Encourage open conversations about mental health and wellness.
