Post-Thanksgiving I cooked up a storm for mom and me. Combining my love of cooking with my need to save time in the coming months, I have practiced with recipes that bring the fun into food. And I have learned that what comes in that is good makes what comes out even better. I am a gourmet at heart and had a lot of fun with many recipes from Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child. Blinis, mayonnaise, aioli (which is made with smashed, leftover white bread), salmon soufflé (canned is fine), prepared salad, apple pie/crust that can double as cookies, gratin (quiche without the crust), praline (homemade caramel with almond flour. Egg whites take seconds to whip by hand when they're clean.

Describing self as craft roots (black velvet paintings, origami, linoleum block print, origami, paper tole, needlepoint), investigation into the range of paper's limits always really delights me. This is printmaking paper which when wetted and shaped dries hard. It's great fun to see the range of possibilities with this paper. Don't recall which brand.

Explore for the sake of exploring.. Use what's available. As my friend Su would say, work with mistakes. Posca paint pens and Golden matte acrylics on leftover wood with the last gasp of spray gesso. My teacher Marat doesn't even use gesso. It's okay to break rules.

Parenting advice can go to extremes.

Regarding outdoor play, some experts sternly warn parents about all the dangers, real or assumed — from strangers to noxious weeds – lurking outside the front door. At the same time, parents sometimes find themselves shamed for their fear.

Even with this fear, most of us want to make sure our children have as much independent play as possible, including play in the natural world, for their healthy development.

Read “Seven Actions Parents Can Take To Reduce Risk And Still Get Their Kids Outside” by Richard Louv on our website here.

I bought this Safari 2 plein aire easel from Jerry’s Artarama last week, which is on sale for $128. It is perfect for pastelists and watercolorists. It lays out flat or upright at any angle, towards or away from you. It has a large box with a metal insert that can be taken out to hold other materials, like a big box of pastels. And the easel itself can hold a small 4” to a large 39.5” piece. There are grooves in the top and the bottom of the easel to hold a 1/4’ thick ground, like an Ampersand clay or pastelboard. And it’s extremely sturdy. It is 12 lbs, which I don’t find light, but some pieces can be taken out for transport if you want to lighten the load even more. I’ve finally upgraded after years of working with a lightweight easel or with a table and chairs and I’m happy I’ve invested in myself so I am more comfortable the more I get out for plein aire work.

Was set up this morning to draw my mother’s birthday bouquet and got pulled away to help a family member. This is as far as I got. Matisse in feel, I worked by looking forward at the bouquet and not down at the paper, moving over the arrangement with my eyes and following physically with my vine charcoal what I wanted to emphasize. My plan is to go in with my soft Sennelier pastels, but if I used a computer program to lay down color I’ll bet that would be cool too. I’m not done and will go back in to finish this.
