Let’s talk road trips with potty-trained toddlers!

This past weekend my daughter got to experience her first road trip ever, I was nervous about the trip because she isn’t a fan of being in her car seat for extended periods of time and the thought of going to different public bathrooms with her during the duration of the trip was cringeworthy. I try my best to be prepared for trips so I know I needed to find something to make her and me comfortable with the bathroom situation.

I found 3 products that really helped out and gave some peace of mind!

1. folding traveling potty was KEY.  It’s compact and comes with a drawstring bag to easily carry and store.
2. Extra large toilet seat covers went perfect with the folding potty seat. I was initially going to use the seat covers in the bathrooms but realized that my daughter usually holds the side of the toilet when she uses it and that would be gross. The fact that these are long enough to drape over the sides of the seat was great and e ach seat cover is individually wrapped
3. 2 in 1 Go potty was essential for in-between stops.  My daughter usually waits until the last minute to tell me it’s potty time so this was good for those emergency moments. We would pull over, pop this open and let her do her thing.

Hopefully these come in handy for you the way they were for me !

PHASES OF BREASTMILK

Colostrum is milk ! It is concentrated milk that is full of nutrients and disease fighting antibodies, it provides everything your baby needs in the early days after birth.

Baby’s stomach is small at birth so the small amounts of colostrum you have available is perfect for baby’s needs.

Milk “coming in” refers to the time when the mother notices increased breast fullness(and other signs) as milk production begins to kick in full force. This is usually 2-3 after birth(transitional phase). For some mothers it may take longer than 3 days.

Milk production will begin to slow down if milk is not being removed. So if breastfeeding is the plan it’s best to nurse on demand.

Breastfeeding on demand for the first 6 weeks allows the breastmilk to regulate the exact amount that is needed for baby as well as the nutritional needs.

Meeting with a lactation consultant after birth is always recommended.

SKIN TO SKIN

Skin to skin also known as kangaroo care is when baby is placed on your bare chest, covered by a blanket.

Studies show that skin to skin contact, especially in the first hour of life provides benefits for both mom and baby.

Benefits include:
- Stabilizes baby’s breathing, heart rate, temperature, and blood sugar.
- Lowers risk of colic
- Increases likelihood of breastfeeding
- Relieves stress for mom and baby
- Contributes to accelerated brain development
- Increases milk production
- Creates a bond between baby and their parents

Skin to skin can be hard to achieve right away after a cesarean so it’s good to speak with a doctor to see if they will allow it if you and baby are alert and stable.

Skin to skin with both parents is equally important and should be done through the first months of life. 🥰

It is with incredible sadness that I report the loss of beloved NJ wife and mother of 4, Jenayah Nelums . Jenayah passed away in Mt Holly NJ on 12/23/21, 11 days after giving birth. Although high risk, she had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery of a healthy baby boy that they named Asaan. It is her husband’s Aaron’s belief that his wife passed away due to an unresolved abdominal bleed. Another preventable death all too common in Black women. NJ ranks 47th in the nation for maternal health outcomes. He has not been granted access to her medical records and her online patient portal has been disabled. We want answers! We are sharing his GoFundme in support of his family. Jenayah leaves behind 4 children and a bereaved husband behind. Our priority at this time is to share Jenayahs story and get financial support to the family. Jenayah LOVED life and you can learn more about her story and who she was in the GoFundMe, link in bio. More action steps will be released soon. All donations go directly to the family and are not directly associated with the organization. Please SHARE this story widely and use the hashtags

INDUCTION

Induction means your doctor or midwife causes your labor to start instead of it happening spontaneously.

Unless there is a medical reason to rush the birth, waiting for labor to start is best option for you and your baby.

There is always an option to deny an induction if there is no medical reason. Ask the doctor for more time and come up with a plan for more prenatal appointments so baby can be monitored.

Questions to ask if induction is offered:
1. What is the medical reason for an induction?
2. What are the benefit & Rick of the induction?
3. What would happen if we decide not to induce?
Remember to use your BRAIN and know exactly why an induction is being offered before making a decision.

Keep in mind natural induction methods are not going to work overnight, some should be done starting around the 36-37 weeks. Castor oil comes with side effects so that should be a last resort, one time option. Do your research and when in doubt contact a professional.

If you were induced what was the reasoning? I got induced because of high blood pressure.
