The myth that safely exercising while pregnant is dangerous, is just that, a myth. Staying fit and eating healthy, promotes a healthier pregnancy and easier delivery.

Females of a normal weight range are recommended to gain 25 to 35 pounds throughout pregnancy. If you are overweight or obese, the recommendation for weight gain decreases. The most common factors that contribute to increased weight are excess food intake and a lack of physical activity. Gaining too much weight during pregnancy can increase your baby's risk of health problems, such as being born significantly larger than average, and complications at birth, such as the baby's shoulder becoming stuck after the head is delivered (shoulder dystocia). Excessive weight gain during pregnancy can also increase your risk of postpartum weight retention, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, preeclampsia, & increased risk of cesarean delivery. Your health care provider can offer guidance on nutrition and physical activity and strategies to manage your weight throughout pregnancy.

If you start out at a healthy weight, you’ll only need to gain 1 to 4 pounds during the first trimester. Steady weight gain is more important in the second and third trimesters — especially if you start out at a healthy weight or you're underweight. According to the guidelines, you'll gain about 1 pound (0.5 kilogram) a week until delivery. An extra 300 calories a day — half a sandwich and a glass of skim milk — might be enough to help you meet this goal. For people who are overweight or obese, the guidelines translate to a weight gain of about 1/2 pound (0.2 kilogram) a week in the second and third trimesters. Try adding a glass of low-fat milk or an ounce of cheese and a serving of fresh fruit to your diet.

There’s no quick fix for a toned summer body. If you shed pounds too fast, you’ll lose muscle, bone, and water instead of fat. It’s very simple. If you consume more calories than your body requires, you will gain weight. The best way to lose weight is gradually with a healthy diet and exercise. The average caloric intake required is 1500 to 2500 daily. If you are unsure of your caloric intake, I recommend keeping a journal for 30 days of everything you eat and drink. Self-monitoring and accountability play a huge role in weight loss and maintenance. For example, if you consume an extra 500 cal per day that your body doesn’t require, you’ll gain a pound per week. A growing belly is the most obvious sign of visceral fat. Visceral fat is belly fat found deep within your abdominal cavity. It surrounds important organs, including your stomach, liver and intestines. It’s different than subcutaneous fat, which is fat just below your skin. Visceral fat is more dangerous to your health. A healthy diet and regular exercise is the safest way to lose excess weight and keep it off, and it’s free. Massive weight gain is rarely associated with hypothyroidism. In general, 5-10 pounds of body weight may be attributable to the thyroid. With a population of over 60% falling in the overweight and obesity range, the cost to our healthcare system is almost $200 billion per year.
