Kratom… we need to talk about it. ⚠️

We’re seeing more people come through our doors who started using kratom thinking it was a safer option…
something “natural”… something to take the edge off.

But here’s the reality 👇
Kratom acts on the same receptors in the brain as opioids.

What starts as relief can turn into:
• Dependence
• Withdrawal symptoms
• Needing more just to feel normal

We’ve seen it firsthand in our community.

This isn’t about fear—it’s about awareness.
Because the trap doesn’t always look like addiction in the beginning…
sometimes it looks like control.

If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out.
Have the conversation. Get connected.

This week we’re proud to introduce Colin Gray, RCP
C.A.R.E.S. Peer Recovery Coach – WakeUp Carolina

Colin is a person in long-term recovery who brings compassion, lived experience, and dedication to the people we serve every day.

As a Peer Recovery Coach, Colin walks alongside individuals and families navigating substance use disorder, helping them find hope, resources, and a path forward.

His passion for helping others reminds us why peer support is so powerful — because the best guidance often comes from someone who has walked the same road.

We are incredibly grateful to have Colin as part of the WakeUp Carolina team.

Stay tuned as we continue introducing the amazing people working every day to strengthen recovery in our community.

This is how we change a community.

Earlier this week at Lucy Beckham High School, we didn’t just give a presentation…
we opened the door to conversations that too many people avoid.

We met with all four grade levels and created a space where students could learn, engage, and most importantly—be heard.

We kicked things off with a Family Feud-style game covering:
👉 Substance Use Disorder
👉 Mental Health
👉 Ma*****na

And they were all in—engaged, competitive, and actually learning in the process.

Then came the real impact.

Our speakers shared their stories—raw, honest, and real.
Not statistics… lived experience.
The kind that sticks with you long after the moment passes.

We wrapped each session with a 30-minute Q&A panel, and the students showed up in a big way—asking real questions, having real conversations, and proving that this generation wants to understand more.

And that’s where the shift happens 👇

When young people feel safe enough to talk…
When stigma gets replaced with understanding…
When education meets lived experience…

That’s how we start preventing the next overdose.
That’s how we change outcomes.
That’s how we build stronger communities.

Huge shoutout to Ms. Riley Plenge for making this happen and giving us the opportunity to connect with these students. Your leadership is making a real impact. 🙏

We may never know which student needed to hear those stories the most…
but we know they were in that room.

And if even one young person walks away making a different decision because of what they heard—
then every second of this mattered.

This wasn’t just a presentation.
This was prevention in action.

March Madness is HERE… Let the games begin! 🏀🔥

There’s nothing like this time of year—
the energy, the upsets, the buzzer beaters.

But here’s the real win
Enjoying it present, clear, and connected.

Recovery doesn’t mean missing out—
it means experiencing life on a whole new level.

So grab your bracket, watch the games, and enjoy every moment.

👇 Let’s hear it…
Who’s winning it all this year??

Recovery looks different for everyone — especially for young people navigating life, school, and growing up.

Creighton’s House is a non-twelve-step, peer-led, all-recovery meeting designed specifically for young adults ages 14–22. It’s a safe and supportive space where young people can talk openly about substance use, life challenges, and recovery with others their age.

This group creates a place where young people can:
• Connect with peers who understand
• Talk about real life challenges
• Learn healthier ways to cope
• Build friendships and support

We also host a monthly Creighton’s House Night Out, giving young people a chance to have fun and build community in a healthy environment.

One of the most powerful things a veteran can experience after leaving the military is reconnecting with other veterans who understand the journey.

Serving Those Who Served (STWS) is WakeUp Carolina’s veteran peer support group built around veteran-to-veteran connection, conversation, and support.

This is a space where veterans can come together to:
• Talk about life after service
• Share experiences and challenges
• Connect with resources and support
• Build friendships and community again

You don’t have to carry everything alone. Sometimes the best support comes from someone who has worn the same uniform.

Being a dad doesn’t come with a manual… especially when addiction enters the picture.

Many fathers carry the stress, fear, and frustration quietly, trying to fix everything on their own. The truth is—you don’t have to do this alone.

Dad2Dad is a peer support group created specifically for fathers who have a child struggling with substance use or recovery.

Join us every Tuesday at 6 PM to connect with other dads who understand what you’re going through. Together we talk about real challenges, real solutions, and ways to better support our families while taking care of ourselves too.

Whether your child is actively struggling or working toward recovery, this space is for you.
