☺️Good morning!
I'm please to announce that I will be hosting a free pranayama class online on the last Sunday of the month starting in July. Offering these teachings will assist me in the completion of my 500 hour pranayama certification in the Gitananda Yoga Tradition. I'm excited to share what I've been learning and practicing over the past year.
What is pranayama?
The term pranayama is often defined as a mere breathing technique or breath restraint. Although, this is partially true, in the Yoga Sutras it is described as going beyond the breath. The term Prana is defined as our essence, or life-force energy, the energy that existed before everything else. To practice pranayama, is to witness and experience this life force energy. Some define it as God, spirit or Brhaman.
Why should one practice Pranayama?
Physical: Promotes overall health, organ function, lymphatic flow, detoxification and vitality
Mental/Emotional: Supports the nervous system, calms stress and anxiety and may help release old traumas hidden on a psychic level
Spiritual: Helps us connect with that power greater than ourself. Connects us with the whole of existence
The format of the class will be as follows:
Seated integration and chant
Brief explanation of the Gitananda Yoga Tradition and definition of Pranayama
Light warm-up and series of gentle movements, tapping and tension-release techniques
Chosen pranayama practice for the month
Relaxation practice to conclude
Time for any questions
This class is suited to all levels but is not appropriate if you are a smoker.
