During , we’re honoring the incredible teammates who make home health and hospice care possible. 🌟 Today, we’re spotlighting Larry Nations, a physical therapist on our St. Louis Home Health team, and the story of how he found his calling.
"When people ask why I became a home health physical therapist, my answer is simple: God led me here. Let me explain—His ways are not my ways.
As a child, my family visited my great-aunt in a nursing home every Sunday after Mass. I didn’t yet understand the joy children brought to older adults. All I saw were residents in wheelchairs or using walkers, with deformities and missing teeth—frankly, it scared me. I decided early on that I did not like “old people.”
⏩ Fast-forward about fifteen years. I went to physical therapy school, determined to work with YOUNG athletes in an outpatient ortho setting. I achieved my goal, and I loved it! Then my company secured a contract to provide physical therapy services for a rural hospital, including home health therapy. I was the only one willing to take it on, believing all patients deserve quality care.
As the time approached for me to start this “adventure” in home health, I wasn’t expecting to walk right back into the world that once terrified me. Yet that’s exactly what happened. Not only were most of my patients elderly, but the therapist assigned to train me was in her 70s, had a severe knee deformity, and wore an eight-inch shoe lift —straight out of my childhood nightmares.
God has a sense of humor.
💙 You see, I love home health. The people, the purpose, the impact—it became my calling in a way I never saw coming. And I’m grateful for it every single day.
His ways are not my ways."
Thank you, Larry, for your dedication, compassion, and for making a difference in the lives of your patients every single day!
