MEET CHARLES WATTS

Charles is our dedicated Secretary at Step 1 Recovery. Charles brings a powerful personal connection to our mission, celebrating 28 years of freedom from alcohol and drugs. His journey started on Skid Row in Los Angeles, where he first worked as a social worker. His experiences there, though eye-opening, didn't immediately set him on a sober path, but they eventually inspired his commitment to giving back.

Charles was among the founders of Step 1 Recovery, sparked by a crucial discussion on how to aid homeless and disadvantaged individuals struggling with substance use disorder (SUD). His vision for the organization is to see individuals not just achieve sobriety but also transition smoothly into sober living and ultimately lead independent, fulfilling lives.

Away from his vital work with us, Charles is a retired educator, a published writer, and an active member of the Poetry Society of South Carolina. He lives by the words, "We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.”

Step 1 Recovery was born right here on the streets of Charleston, started by one man in recovery who just wanted to help others find their way.

That grassroots spirit still drives everything we do today. We are proud to be a local organization serving local people.

MEET NICOLE CARMAN

Meet Nicole Carman, a dedicated Board Member at Step 1 Recovery Resources. Nicole brings nine years of personal recovery experience and invaluable insights from her time working with homeless women in recovery at The Serenity House, part of the Knox Area Rescue Ministries in Tennessee.

Driven by a deep-seated passion for supporting the homeless in recovery, Nicole returned to this field after realizing it’s where her passion lies. Her vision for Step 1 Recovery Resources is to ensure immediate access to necessary resources for those ready to embark on their recovery journey. She envisions our organization as a robust support system equipped with the funds and facilities to offer help without delay.

Outside of her impactful work, Nicole enjoys traveling, playing Mahjong, exploring Charleston's vibrant restaurant scene, and spending quality time with her husband, their two grown children, and their spouses. One quote she loves is, “I can't, God can, so I think I will let him,” and we're super thankful she's a part of the team!

Studies show that spending at least 90 days in treatment leads to much better outcomes, and six months or more can truly change the trajectory of someone's life.

That is exactly the kind of commitment we fund. Long-term recovery is possible and the research backs it up. Please consider donating to help fund our mission - no donation is too small. https://www.step1recoveryresources.org/donate

MEET PAM HRICIK

Pam is a key member of our board at Step 1 Recovery. Pam just had her 29 year sobriety date on Sunday, March 16th! CONGRATULATIONS PAM!!! 🎉

Pam is deeply committed to supporting others on their journey to sobriety. She's driven by a desire to ensure that no one is left without support due to lack of resources.

A Charleston resident for 26 years, Pam has been a vibrant contributor to the local nonprofit scene. She’s made significant impacts, from her early days volunteering with the United Way’s 211 Helpline to her dynamic leadership as President of the Village Repertory Theatre Company, where she spearheaded numerous fundraising efforts. Pam also co-founded Keys for Hope, which generated nearly $100,000 for One80 Place, a local homeless shelter.

After recently selling her special event business, Pam now dedicates her time to her art as a pressed flower artist and enjoys traveling with her husband, embracing the next chapter of life as an empty nester.

South Carolina has more alcohol-related deaths per capita than the average state, which is a sobering reminder of just how serious this issue is in our own backyard.

Awareness is the first step toward change. Sharing posts like this one helps more than you know.
