MEET PAM HRICIK

Pam is a key member of our board at Step 1 Recovery. Pam just had her 29 year sobriety date on Sunday, March 16th! CONGRATULATIONS PAM!!! 🎉

Pam is deeply committed to supporting others on their journey to sobriety. She's driven by a desire to ensure that no one is left without support due to lack of resources.

A Charleston resident for 26 years, Pam has been a vibrant contributor to the local nonprofit scene. She’s made significant impacts, from her early days volunteering with the United Way’s 211 Helpline to her dynamic leadership as President of the Village Repertory Theatre Company, where she spearheaded numerous fundraising efforts. Pam also co-founded Keys for Hope, which generated nearly $100,000 for One80 Place, a local homeless shelter.

After recently selling her special event business, Pam now dedicates her time to her art as a pressed flower artist and enjoys traveling with her husband, embracing the next chapter of life as an empty nester.

MEET GAYLE SMITHER

Meet Gayle Smither, a valued member of our Board of Directors at Step 1 Recovery Resources. With a strong foundation in long-term sobriety, Gayle is involved in various recovery communities. He views his role as a powerful avenue to impact the lives of those battling substance abuse while continually expanding his own insights through new challenges and perspectives on addiction.

Gayle envisions Step 1 Recovery Resources as a lifeline for individuals struggling with substance abuse, providing essential access to recovery resources regardless of financial barriers. He is dedicated to fostering a supportive network of volunteers and community partners, all united in their goal to empower individuals to reclaim their lives and sustain long-term sobriety.

Now retired, Gayle remains active, volunteering for nonprofits and serving as an appointed Public Member of the South Carolina Commission on Judicial Conduct. He enjoys family life with his spouse, spending time with their grandchildren, traveling, and anything baseball related.

Residing in a long-term treatment facility allows someone to practice important coping skills and become comfortable with using them once they leave. Treatment can also help someone become more productive in all areas of their life.

As they reside in the same facility and attend the same group meetings, they will also forge connections with others in the program. These relationships can be helpful when working through difficult issues, especially when people are in similar stages of recovery.

Step 1 Recovery obtained IRS 501(c)(3) status in 2023. Through donations and relationships with other community organizations, the goal is to help as many “hopeless” people as possible get the help they desperately want in order to turn their lives around and rejoin society with dignity and sobriety.

Substance use disorder is the medical term used to describe a pattern of using a substance (drug) that causes significant problems or distress. This may be missing work or school, using the substance in dangerous situations, such as driving a car.

It may lead to substance-related legal problems or continued substance use that interferes with friendships, family relationships, or both.

Substance Use Disorder is extremely serious and has a tremendous impact in the Charleston Tri-County Area.

Charleston is a beautiful, historic destination that millions visit each year, but visitors don't see the hidden struggle with addiction in our community. We're working to help our neighbors find hope and healing right here where they live, restoring lives and strengthening our community.

MEET Cyrus Kamini

Having walked the path of recovery himself, Cyrus brings authentic understanding and heart to our mission. As a Certified Peer Support Specialist, he combines lived experience with professional training to serve others on their journey to sobriety.

What began as individual outreach work evolved into something much bigger. "I was doing this work on my own and was driven by an intuitive thought to join others to this project," Cyrus shares. "I am not alone in this work anymore!" His vision? Providing as many people as possible with access to recovery solutions.

Beyond Step 1, you'll find Cyrus distributing coats to the homeless, bringing Christmas joy to children at local motels, riding, hiking, dancing at Grateful Dead shows, or enjoying a well-deserved nap. He's also navigating the exciting journey of raising his 20-year-old son through college!

One of his favorite Rumi quotes perfectly captures his philosophy: "Whoever travels without a guide needs two hundred years for a two day journey." We're grateful to have Cyrus helping guide our mission of hope and healing. 🙏

We hope to place as many people as possible into recovery facilities at no cost to them. Those who qualify (after completing a questionnaire and an over-the-phone interview) will be placed in a South Carolina recovery facility. Placement depends on the funds Step 1 Recovery has available and the beds available at the recovery facilities.

As a local organization, we focus our efforts on residents of the tri-county area of Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester in South Carolina. All facilities we work with are thoroughly vetted and meet our high standards and facility requirements. Helping people find their way from hopelessness to being productive members of society is what we strive for each day.
