Zines with Sol

Zines with Sol Zines with Sol: platform for DIY media & birth work by people of color.

Sol y Luna Birth Work provides full-spectrum physical, mental and emotional support to birthing peoples. In the United States, Western medical practices too often create unsafe and discouraging environments for expecting families, in particular for poor, working class people of color. Sol y Luna thus provides tools for families to navigate within the system, to recognize their strength, honor thei

r power and to bring with them the knowledge they already carry into the laboring process and beyond. With continuous support of a doula or birth worker, birthing families are less likely to have pain medications, epidurals, negative feelings about childbirth, vacuum or forceps-assisted births, and C-sections. The presence of a birth worker postpartum may also reduce symptoms of postpartum depression. I do this work because I believe empowerment of birthing people is foundational for the empowerment of the next generation. When our babies are born into an environment filled with love, that is the first emotion they feel upon arrival earth side. I do not doubt then that it is love that they carry deep within their spirit for the rest of their waking lives. Birth Services Offered

A reminder:
That even when earth is burning there are seeds waiting to burst.
That people care more then they don’t and that most are willing to act on love instead of hate.
That fear keeps us alive but what is a life if it’s not moving? A life in hiding?

We are children of people who hid to survive, who cut off tongues so their lips could part to breathe in air called safety. And although they want us to be safe they also lived so we could fly.

This is time to reassemble the tongue.
Time to remember all our broken pieces.
To build from the rubble with my two brown hands wrapped in yours, irrelevant of color, because white supremacy is a mask for the billionaire class to hide behind.

Chico was a reminder that in our smallness we are giants. Perception is our guiding force. It’s the small things that stack up to form towers. Mountains are disassembled pebble by pebble.

Thank you
For holding me and housing me and feeding me and guiding me, for laughter and real talk and criss cross pathways.

Thank you for hosting an incredible first-time event! Wishing yall power and prosperity in continuing to pour magic out from this space.

What an honor to sit next to and Evelyn and Ember.

That’s where the beauty is.

I’ve never spent so much time thinking about an election and what it means to vote as I have these last few weeks.

I’ll spare you all the thoughts and simplify it to share that voting is an act that does indeed threaten the powerful elite which is why we are seeing mass misinformation campaigns convincing people that the process is rigged. When voting was first enacted by colonial powers, only 6% of the country could vote (land owning white men). The idea that ALL people in this country (minus incarcerated and undocumented folks) could have a say on who sits in political chairs is considered a threat to wealthy, patriarchal, war hungry politicians because the truth is most of us are not rich and would rather spend a dollar on feeding babies than a dollar on killing them. That being said, the electoral college needs to be abolished because it’s antiquated and doesn’t it make the most democratic sense to just have the popular vote determine propositions, laws and people to enact those propositions and laws? I firmly believe that voting is just ONE tool for social change. Your moral and values are most represented by what you do on the daily, not by what circle you fill in on a ballot.

Alllllllll that to say that zines are so dope because they are tools that combat misinformation, uplift histories and narratives silenced and erased, bring the people together to inspire and create, and represent the power we have to determine what we want for ourselves and for our communities. They are accessible treasures that remind us of our beauty. They are magical stones that remove cynicism to make room for hope.

Join us in a zine-making workshop themed around eco-justice led by Zines with Sol owner, Brenda Montaño. Zines are do-it-yourself books for the people by the people!
As we kick off Earth Month, we want to dive into what it means to know and have “environmental justice” or “ecological justice” commonly referred to as “eco-justice” within the local community and the bioregion. Defining eco-justice can mean many different things to each individual. We’ll explore other zines that may give rise to inspiration for defining this for ourselves before making our zines.

What you can expect during this 3-hour workshop:
📖Zine library exploration
❤Community building
🎨Zine history (focus on DIY art based on underground/counterculture movements)
✋🏽Discussion on what environmental justice means/looks like to us
🖊Creation of one-page mini zines utilizing minimal supplies focused on our conversation around environmental justice
🍏Refreshments provided

Everyone has a voice! This is an ages 7 and up event and is free for everyone.
Refreshments will be provided. Please register for this event so we can plan food and supplies accordingly.

I learned from the homies that today there was a national call to action for Palestine

Today, I talked to my son about the genocide happening in Gaza. We shed tears, embraced, looked at this small land mass on a map. I talked to him about the power we each have as individuals, that it’s often so easy in this country to ignore others suffering but that we shouldn’t. We can’t. That we have to use our power to create peace all around us, every day, and especially when there is violence happening. We moved the feeling into an action: discussion, understanding, prayer and art.

We learned that the sandia has been a symbol of resistance for many decades in Palestine because of the constant attempts to outlaw the Palestinian flag. After years of censorship and repression of the flag, the sandia symbol is used to represent it instead- red, black, green and white. The red poppies are the national flower of Palestine.

Viva viva Palestina! From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!

🌿 Making this zine was a surreal experience for me. I felt like I was taken to a different world as I spread the fotos out in front of me— a world of color, creation, flowers and earth scents. Thank you to my comrades comadres + for trusting me in ceremony: both la ceremonia de cerrada y ceremonia de arte. 🌿

🙌🏾 En Tus Manos 🙌🏾

This is not a How-To-Have-A-Cerrada-Zine.

This is a collection of powerful moments that I was blessed to be present in, as a facilitator but also as a student, a homie, an hermana and community organizer.

I let the photos tell the stories.

This work is for the people.

It can not be destroyed no matter the amount of commodification, appropriation or drama.

Cerradas release demons, heal gut systems and ancestral wounds, nurture entire families and teach the next generation how to care for themselves and all those they know.

May this tradition live on para siempre. 🌀

ONE DECADE OF ZINES

10 years ago I made and sold my first zine while living my best life in the Bay Area.

And although this post is to invite you to come see me at this years (swipe right for the flyer!) I also have to give a big shout out to my OG homie and zinester 🎊

As I dug through the archives to share out some photos from those early years, Breena was in all of them. They taught me the basics of photoshop, how to make buttons and print things in non standard formats. We stayed up late many nights creating together, folding and stapling and laughing.

And now look at us— we are parents still creating, still laughing, still tabling at zine fests and still so gratefully in each others life.

Te amo Breena & Miela!

Come say what’s up to all of us next Sunday 9/3 from 11-3 at the Matreon in San Pancho!
