Several gut organisms affect mental health through the microbiota–gut–brain axis and have been shown to contribute to addictions and feelings of anxiety and depression. However, by making a few simple changes in what we eat, such as replacing processed foods with a variety of high-fiber fruits and vegetables, increasing fermented foods that contain Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium and using specific herbs and spices such as turmeric (Curcuma longa), slippery elm (Ulmus rubra), marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis), we can restore the health of the digestive system and improve the way we feel inwardly and how we perceive the world around us.
