If you’ve been out and about lately, you might have noticed something about the weather: it’s wicked hot out there. 🔥 That means it’s time to start thinking about some essentials to bring with you before visiting the park.
Hydrate or diedrate. 💦 We really cannot emphasize this enough. Depending on how long you’re hiking and the time of day, you’ll likely need between 2-4 liters of water. This is far more than a single plastic water bottle you might buy at the store. If you carry extra and don’t end up needing it, that’s great. It's better to be prepared.
Make sure you have snacks and some good footwear. 🥐 🥾 For food, consider bringing something with complex carbs, a high protein count, and maybe something salty to help replenish those electrolytes. Good footwear does not include flip-flops or sneakers, but it does include hiking boots, approach shoes, and general closed-toed footwear with solid tread.
Throw some shade (with a really cool hat). 🤠 You may or may not have seen a ranger or two with a pretty iconic hat. They’re large, they’re wide, they’re stylish, but they’re also ✨ F U N C T I O N A L ✨. They’ll help keep you cooler, they’ll help keep you from burning, and they’ll let you embrace your inner fashionista.
Bring the electrolytes. 🧂 As mentioned, you can bring some salty snacks but also consider bringing something like electrolyte packets for added bonuses. You can mix some with all those liters of water you’ll now be carrying, because you’re responsible, and we appreciate that.
Bring that sunscreen ☀️ We encourage everyone to bring and utilize sunscreen. Anyone can get damage from UV radiation. This type of radiation doesn’t give you cool superpowers, but it does mutate your cells over time. Whether your motivation is beauty or longevity, sunscreen is there to help.
Hiking between the hours of 10 AM – 5 PM will greatly increase your exposure to heat and sunlight, so consider hiking early morning and later in the day. If you travel towards evening, we encourage you to bring an alternate light source that isn’t your phone, like a headlamp or a flashlight. 🔦
Be safe, hike responsibly, and enjoy what this landscape has to offer you.
