I had the pleasure of hosting a high school student over the past two days—shoutout to Jaclyn! This was the only photo we got after the long day out in the sun for aquatics today. She spent the day observing sessions and getting a behind-the-scenes look at what pediatric occupational therapy is all about in multiple settings (clinic, daycare, aquatics). She was super engaged, asked great questions, and soaked it all in like a sponge. I loved seeing her interest in the field and her thoughtful reflections throughout the day. It’s always inspiring to share this work with future professionals—who knows, this might be the start of her journey into OT!

EARLY INTERVENTION 🧸

Early intervention is everything. As a Pediatric COTA, I’ve seen firsthand how starting therapy early can build a strong foundation for lifelong skills. The earlier we can support a child’s development, the more progress we can make—together. It’s not about ‘fixing’—it’s about empowering. Let’s catch the little things before they become big hurdles.

Let’s Talk Tuesday: The Power of Playgrounds in Child Development

Playgrounds are often seen simply as spaces for fun and recreation—but their impact on a child’s development goes far beyond just play. These environments provide rich opportunities for children to build essential gross and fine motor skills, improve balance and coordination, and develop spatial awareness.

Beyond the physical benefits, playgrounds are a natural setting for social-emotional growth. Children learn how to take turns, negotiate, problem-solve, and build friendships—all through play. Whether it’s climbing a ladder, navigating monkey bars, or engaging in pretend play, every interaction is a building block for overall development.

As a pediatric occupational therapy practitioner, I recognize the value of these unstructured play moments in helping children meet developmental milestones in a fun, engaging way. So next time you’re at the playground, remember—it’s more than play; it’s purposeful learning in action.

GRAVITATIONAL INSECURITY! 🎡

Does your child avoid swings, climbing elevated surfaces, or even tilting their head backward? They might be experiencing gravitational insecurity - a sensory processing challenge where movement, especially when the head is not upright or when feet are off the ground, can feel scary or unsafe.

It's more than your child being 'cautious' - for these children, seemingly fun activities can trigger real anxieties.

You might notice:
-Fear of being picked up
-Clinging during movement activities
-Avoidance of slides, stairs, or uneven surfaces.

HOW OT HELPS:
OT helps your child to build trust through gentle, graded exposure to movement - always at the child's pace - helping them feel more confident and in control of their body in space.

Movement should feel fun, not frightening!

What form of play does your child engage in the most?? Understanding how kids play helps us support their development in fun and meaningful ways.

Sensorimotor Play
Think: exploring textures, sounds, movement! This type of play helps infants and toddlers learn through their senses and body movements.

Constructive Play
Think: building blocks, puzzles, crafts! Kids create or build something—great for motor skills and problem-solving.

Pretend (Dramatic) Play
Think: playing house, superheroes, or tea party! This type fuels imagination, social skills, and emotional development.

Play is serious work for kids—so let them explore, build, and imagine!
