How did we get started?

The Center was founded by Ellen Stevens after decades of working in church environments and witnessing the need to bridge the gap between traditional Christian approaches to trauma and healing, and the reality of individuals recovering from sexual and emotional harm.

After working to create resources and trainings for a faithful response to trauma and abuse, our work has extended to include a broad range of issues related to mental and spiritual health.

Our growing collaboration includes teams of seasoned therapists, Christian pastors, and faith community leaders committed to engaging the intersection of faith and theology with an awareness of the impact of human experience and mental health.

As humans, we are wired for relationships. Our brains and bodies require the presence of others in order to fully function. Unfortunately, most of us have had disappointing, painful, and even harmful experiences with those who we most needed. As a result, we often struggle to connect well, repair well, and engage meaningful relationships.

Our course, Healthy Relationships, is a one day, interactive class exploring the fundamentals of engaging, repairing, and sustaining connections with others. Helpful for a wide range of relationships (parent-child, couples, friendships, and many others), we will cover:

* Attachment – understanding how we develop our sense of interpersonal relationships and create patterns for relating with others – from birth through all of life.
* Keys for healing wounded relationships and ways to intentionally maintain healthy connection, including attunement, boundaries, and communication.
* Helpful tips to get through lovely and challenging family dynamics during holidays and other important gatherings.

We live in a beautiful and messy world where the desire for hope is often muddied by the nature of harm. While scripture teaches that God pursues humanity to restore the world, the reality of heartache and trauma in the human experience has led to emotional, spiritual, and relational separation – making the need for true healing more important than ever. Unfortunately, many churches, pastors, and communities of faith are not equipped to address these complex spaces.

By providing education, resources, and trainings on issues related to emotional and mental health, we are equipping churches, leaders, and individuals to bring hope and healing to their communities.

Early childhood relationships, specifically with our primary caregivers, shape and form our social and internal worlds. When we experience inconsistent, neglectful, or harmful relationships, our ability to connect with others is often accompanied by a sense of anxiety or avoidance. Due to these broken initial relationships, many people experience lifetimes of relational distress, isolation, loneliness, and difficulty belonging.

We are not doomed to live in these impoverished places. When we understand the way attachment forms our ability to authentically show up and connect with others and then learn ways to revive our sense of connection, we can begin to seek out and live in healthy relationships.
