Hey climbers!
Let’s talk about neck and shoulder pain since they can be closely related. Whether you are climbing or belaying you are most likely putting some strain on your neck through repetitive and awkward movements, or in the case of the belayer, prolonged postures.
Studies have suggested that up to two thirds of shoulder pain can be of a spinal source. Because of this, I always make it a priority with my shoulder patients to clear the neck and have found many patients in the past where their shoulder symptoms were actually being referred from their neck.

Signs that your neck might be causing symptoms in your shoulder include:
➡️ Shoulder pain without limitations in shoulder mobility.
➡️ Neck pain or stiffness
➡️ Shoulder pain while sitting
➡️ Shoulder pain that doesn’t change with exercises and stretching.
If you have a persistent shoulder problem that doesn’t seem to want to get better on its own, or bothersome neck pain, come see me! It might only take a couple of sessions to get you back to climbing pain free.

Hard work and consistency pay off!

We live in a time where we are used to instant gratification and because of that when it comes to our health we often look for a quick fix. Injections, braces, taping, massage guns, energy drinks, and pain medications are examples of “band-aid” treatments and are rarely long term solutions.
Possible solutions to your pain, weakness, and lack of energy will likely include a combination of meaningful exercise, sufficient sleep, mindful nutrition, and stress management. Most of these solutions will not yield instant results, but the results will build over time and provide you with long lasting relief.

If you’re in pain or just need help getting started send me a message or give me a call!

Hey climbers!
How are your shoulders doing while climbing? Whether reaching, pushing, or pulling during your climb shoulders require a perfect combination of strength, stability, and mobility. If one of those three components is lacking you might end up getting feelings of tightness, discomfort, or pain in the shoulder. Stretching and exercises can have a positive effect on these symptoms but there’s no one size fits all treatment. Targeted and specific activities will get you better much faster.

If you find yourself struggling with shoulder pain getting a professional evaluation can help identify the problem and get you started back on the road to a pain free climb. It could take as little as 2 visits to help you feel confident in treating yourself. Please reach out with any questions!

Parents! Do you have a child that’s starting fall sports soon? 🏈🏐⚽️🏃
Then this is for you! It’s common for kids as they ramp into their sport of choice to start getting some aches and pains. I know it’s hard to know at what point you should seek professional help. Ask yourself:
▪️Is the problem limiting their participation in their sport?
▪️Is the problem getting worse? (More pain, symptoms lasting longer, swelling etc.)
▪️Is participation in their sport starting to affect their daily activities at home and school?

If the answer to any of these is yes it’s a good idea to get them checked out. It might only take one visit to get your child headed in the right direction and back to the sport they love. Also, the longer you wait the longer the problem might take to get better, so act now!

At All Terrain Physical Therapy we offer no charge consultations, over the phone or in person, to help you understand what might be going on and if your athlete needs to be seen by a professional.

Hey climbers! 🧗
Rock climbing is awesome, but it can also be hard on the body. Repetitive motions under load can lead to joint pain and stiffness and muscle strains or ligament sprains. When managed properly these issues can be resolved for good and you can continue to climb without being limited by pain!

The most common injuries I have treated in climbers over the past six months are:
➡️Shoulder pain with reaching and pulling
➡️Neck pain during and after climbing
➡️Low back and hip pain with hiking and climbing.
➡️And a few finger problems mixed in there.

If this sounds like you, please reach out! It may take as little as one visit to understand your injury and make significant changes.

Stay tuned for future “Hey Climbers!” posts with injury prevention and treatment tips.

Thinking about starting a new workout program, train for a race, or get into a new sport? Then this post is for you!
Recognizing that each person is different, please use these tips and apply them to yourself as best you can. Whether you are looking to run your first half marathon this summer or getting into rock climbing, consider these things to avoid injury.
⏱Give yourself time! When it comes to most sports a safe rule of thumb is to increase your training by 10% each week. Also, try not to increase your time and your intensity in the same week.
🤸🏻Make sure you do a dynamic warm up. It doesn’t have to be long, just a few minutes, but this with improve your body’s ability to support you.
🧘🏼‍♀️Make sure you stretch afterwards. Taking 8-10mins following your workout or activity with decrease your pain and soreness afterwards and allow your body to recover effectively so you can get back to it next time.
I see patients every week that started experiencing pain as a result of ramping up an activity too quickly. If you’re thinking about getting into a new sport or activity and have questions give me a call or send me a DM.

“Make time for your wellness, or you will be forced to make time for your illness.”

Life is busy and often our own health gets put on the back burner. Summer is a great time of year to find a time in your schedule, even just 15-30mins, to make your own health and wellness a priority. This will look different for everyone. Walking, biking, running, climbing, resistance training, yoga, and dancing are all great options that don’t have to eat up a lot of time. If you’re not already consistently making time for your health, I would invite you to do it now. Your body will thank you! Your physical and mental strength will improve and propel you to do more with your day.

Stay tuned for my next post about ramping up in your new activity so to avoid injuries.
