Are doulas just for "natural" hippie births? First time moms? People without partners?

Heck no! My ideal client?

Someone who wants educational, physical and emotional support - before, during and after labor. ๐Ÿ’œ

Someone who wants to know their options and be supported in their choices. ๐Ÿ’œ

Whether you are planning an unmedicated birth, an induction or a c-section, I will be there to help you have your best birth possible.

Doulas are for every body and every birth (and every birth you have)!!!

Due in the next month?
It's not too late to hire a doula!

Gave birth in the last 12 months?
It's not too late to hire a doula!

Did you know that postpartum doulas can help with the emotional and physical recovery after birth? Medicaid will cover visits up to 12 months after birth, even if you didn't have a birth doula. Visits may include light housekeeping, running errands, assistance with newborn care such as diapering, bathing, feeding and comforting, assistance with siblings, and more! My doula is still visiting almost 5 months postpartum, because mom life is hard and we all need support. I would love to support you in this time of your life!

I haven't taken many pictures as we've kept our phones on silent and put away, but doula training is going well and so confirming that I am where I need to be!
I am so thankful to my village for getting me here and helping Travis take care of the babies while I'm here.

Why should you have a doula?
Because you never know what will happen and you need someone to be there for you to advocate for you. Family and partner support & presence is priceless, but it can be really hard for them to see you in pain or to not be affected by their own emotions. A doula can also instruct your support person in comfort measures so they can be more involved in the process!

My first birth, at 19w4d, I didn't know I was in labor, but I was definitely uncomfortable, leaking fluid and wanted to get checked out. Kirsten was already in the birth canal by the time I made it into triage. My sister was with me and the sweetest L&D nurse Sarah talked me through the short process.

My second birth, at 40w, contractions started at 3 am, I labored at home for awhile and let my husband wake up for a bit before I told him it was time to go to the hospital. We mainly labored alone. My husband kept me entertained but felt helpless, especially when I was "stuck" in sidelying with butt contractions for 3 hours after they manually broke my water. Renay was born at 1:06am on her due date.

For my third birth, at 39w2d, we were both so worn out. Our 15 mo was sick/teething for her well child visit that day and we actually said "promise not to go into labor tonight" as we went to bed (and he took his sleeping pills!) Well I woke up at 11:45 pm covered in blood and still bleeding... called 911, called my brother in law to pick up Renay, woke up Travis, and texted my doula team By Design Birth Services. Karina started driving to the hospital and Elizabeth texted with me until Karina arrived. Elizabeth arrived a couple hours later for birth photography. Since Travis had taken his sleeping pills, he was pretty out of it and we told him he could sleep. After watching some Ridiculousness with us, he fell asleep. Karina provided comfort, advocated for wireless monitoring & other choices we had discussed in my birth plan, got blankets, suggested position changes, and just brought peace & joy to the room. She made sure I didn't get "stuck" and that I was confident & comfortable in my choices, even in a hospital that I was not planning on delivering in. And she remembered to wake up Travis for the pushing... Audry was born at 5:36 am. And my water broke as she came out. :)

I felt so much more prepared, supported, and confident in Audry's birth. Thanks Karina Gerbers!

What is a doula, anyway?
Here is a description from Better Birth Jackson, the doula collective I will be joining after my training. They connected me to my doula Karina and photographer Elizabeth with By Design Birth Services. So excited to grow and serve our community together! :)

This vision was given to me on a sleepless night a couple of months before Audry was born. I applied for an MDHHS-sponsored training that night, along with hundreds of others. Unfortunately, I was not one of the chosen 24, but was offered a small discount to an upcoming training.
Iโ€™m on a journey to empower women in labor by becoming a doula, and each donation will help me complete my training and make a real difference in their lives. If you're able, I would really appreciate it if you could click the link below to contribute or share it with anyone who might be interested. Thank you for considering supporting this meaningful cause!

Hi, I'm Lindsey.
I'm a wife & mother (of two under 2 ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿ‘ถ and two in Heaven ๐Ÿ‘ผ๐Ÿ‘ผ) trying to return to work from my second maternity leave, struggling to find a traditional job, ready to forge ahead and start my own business instead!
When I grow up I'm going to be a doula!!!
In the next two weeks I will participate in doula training so that I can offer support, strength, advocacy, and peace to women in labor, as well as before & after. As I've learned more about the role of a doula, I've seen how it can blend my past roles in sports medicine & ministry with my new Mommy life in a beautiful way.
Plus, I'll get to snuggle all the babies without having to be pregnant again!! ๐Ÿ™Œ
