Why should you have a doula?
Because you never know what will happen and you need someone to be there for you to advocate for you. Family and partner support & presence is priceless, but it can be really hard for them to see you in pain or to not be affected by their own emotions. A doula can also instruct your support person in comfort measures so they can be more involved in the process!
My first birth, at 19w4d, I didn't know I was in labor, but I was definitely uncomfortable, leaking fluid and wanted to get checked out. Kirsten was already in the birth canal by the time I made it into triage. My sister was with me and the sweetest L&D nurse Sarah talked me through the short process.
My second birth, at 40w, contractions started at 3 am, I labored at home for awhile and let my husband wake up for a bit before I told him it was time to go to the hospital. We mainly labored alone. My husband kept me entertained but felt helpless, especially when I was "stuck" in sidelying with butt contractions for 3 hours after they manually broke my water. Renay was born at 1:06am on her due date.
For my third birth, at 39w2d, we were both so worn out. Our 15 mo was sick/teething for her well child visit that day and we actually said "promise not to go into labor tonight" as we went to bed (and he took his sleeping pills!) Well I woke up at 11:45 pm covered in blood and still bleeding... called 911, called my brother in law to pick up Renay, woke up Travis, and texted my doula team By Design Birth Services. Karina started driving to the hospital and Elizabeth texted with me until Karina arrived. Elizabeth arrived a couple hours later for birth photography. Since Travis had taken his sleeping pills, he was pretty out of it and we told him he could sleep. After watching some Ridiculousness with us, he fell asleep. Karina provided comfort, advocated for wireless monitoring & other choices we had discussed in my birth plan, got blankets, suggested position changes, and just brought peace & joy to the room. She made sure I didn't get "stuck" and that I was confident & comfortable in my choices, even in a hospital that I was not planning on delivering in. And she remembered to wake up Travis for the pushing... Audry was born at 5:36 am. And my water broke as she came out. :)
I felt so much more prepared, supported, and confident in Audry's birth. Thanks Karina Gerbers!
