Whether you were diagnosed when you were young or did not discover until much later, navigating adult life with ADHD can present a number of unique challenges for people -- from work, to relationships, to parenting, etc.

Sometimes, having support and learning some new skills can be helpful.

As is true in so many areas of mental health, what we repeatedly focus on becomes integral to how we see the world.

Self Compassion is often a challenging practice to learn... even -- or maybe especially -- for those who freely give compassion to others. It can feel strange to feel this for ourselves. But, as the author notes, learning to give yourself this care can, over time, reshape your existence.

Upon watching me remain incredibly stuck for weeks on end, a therapist once told me: "Don't believe everything you think."

At the time it was a wholly new concept. I can also remember, candidly, that the notion both shook me a bit and weirdly made me kinda mad.

Ever since then, however, I have heard that same idea repeated and rephrased and repurposed in countless venues and from dozens upon dozens of different sources -- so often, in fact, I remain kind of dumbfounded I made it to my 30s without ever hearing it. Maybe I had but it had never stuck. Regardless...

From 12-step recovery rooms, to mindfulness-rooted therapies like Acceptance & Commitment, to ancient spiritual teachings, to quotes like the one above from Susan David in her book Emotional Agility, the idea of holding lightly to our emotions -- and the thoughts they generate -- is so central to so much of mental health that it's genuinely hard to overstate its true value.

To this day when I find myself getting stuck in emotional mud, one of the most useful questions I've learned to ask is "what am I believing right now?"

If I sit with that long enough, I can usually find a thought or two in there (or maybe way more) that have been erroneously tagged as FACT by my brain. Upon seeing that, the mud usually starts to loosen up a bit.
